News, Aquamage.

The Hallowe'en event is out in Old School RuneScape. Now, this is the 2006 Hallowe'en event.

Assuming this bit of dialogue was in fact in the main game back during the 2006 Hallowe'en event, it appears the player... has no middle names. This is inconvenient for me.

Perhaps you can try the event for yourself and record the quotes.
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you[...]For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

Again, those lines are just jokes. The line "If I had any middle names" is a joke similiar to the whole exchange with Narf ending with "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

I'm pretty sure all of these things are meant as jokes and not as serious hints that our avatar has a backstory prior to our creating them.

Of course we don't. Jagex hasn't written any backstory for our character. The very point of this thread is to collect all the references we have about the Adventurer's backstory in the game (be it serious or not) and to make something out of it, and to influence Jagex so they would someday come up with more backstory for player character.

Plus, who'd say anything like that as a joke? I know I wouldn't. Besides, the dialogue of the player character and the emotions their chathead makes pretty much implies they're telling the truth.

Personally, I think it would be a BAD idea to give our character a pre-set backstory. If Jagex wanted us to have a pre-set backstory, they wouldn't have had us design our own character, choosing skin color, hair color, gender, and so on.

No, instead we'd be playing as Zanik, or as Ozan or Ariane or any of the other characters who are essentially the true protagonists of their stories. As it is, due to RuneScape's nature, these characters have to team up with a player-created character in order to solve mysteries, defeat the bad guys, and set things right.

I LIKE the fact that our character has no backstory prior to appearing at Tutorial Island/Lumbridge/Burthorpe/wherever. It allows us to fill in who and what he/she was before coming to Gielinor.

A number of Jagex designers have agreed on this point. They've said that they view the player avatar as 'You' and giving him/her any sort of backstory would defeat the purpose. And as for me, I'm fine with it. I'm happy that any 'hints' as to a backstory can easily be dismissed as jokes.

As for the 'middle names' thing, it's a fourth-wall breaking joke just like the Narf discussion. At least that's my take on it.

I too enjoy creating my own story for my character. However, as certain things have been indicated about my character, I would rather incorporate them into said backstory rather than simply dismissing them. There's still plenty of freedom and gaps to fill in on our own. "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you[...]For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

Love the thread!! I think I said this before already.

They should certainly make a quest of the player's vback story... maybe not 200th quest (whcih is Elf), but maybe 300th quest?? xD

But this (below) is arguably your worst part :P

I actually knew that, but I didn't remember that when I was making this thread. I would expect that this is same to all players, which indeed implies that the player character has done something horrible in their past; that may also be the reason why we haven't explored the player character's past: the sin caused them to flee from their hometown. Then again, we must remember that the determination of 'sin' is very loose and the Bible lists more than 650 sins, many of which aren't sins by modern description (such as astrology, philosophy, tattoos, jokes, complaining, fear and not being perfect) so it is possible that people commit things daily that Sin Seer counts as sin.

1. This is RS not Bible-Scape, don't even mention it :P
2. You don't need to reach for hypothetical sins or keep it in the unknown. Just look at the quest and combat requirements... to be able to talk to her we must at least have trained combat on a lot of innocent 'monsters'.

I'm glad you like it. And yes, some official backstory woud be good to see: when I asked about 20 players what was their opinion about exploring player character's past, a majority of them though it was a cool idea.

And thanks for the constructive feedback, you raised some very good points there. Would this work better, then?

I would expect that this is same to all players, which implies that the player character has done something horrible in their past; that may also be the reason why we haven't explored the player character's past: the sin caused them to abandon their past. Then again, the determination of a sin can be very loose and some people can deem something as a sin what others don't.
An in-game example would be Sister Anna who went on a murderous killing spree during One Piercing Note for the sin of dancing. On the other hand, in order to even start the miniquest, we must have quite high Thieving and combat levels, which includes stealing from weak and mass-murdering monsters.

Well... I was way too harsh anyway :( Sorry.
Thank you for being so kind to me :D

Btw, you might say, 'I' also like a bottle of wine.
Examination of a Bottle of wine: "A very good vintage."

Also.. the point about the player being Saradominst... during some quests the player will say stuff that can also shed some light on the early religious persuasions. In most quest I think it's Saradominsts (like the player saying: ''But for the grace of Saradomin am I here now! I was attacked from behind.'' - during Darkness Of Hallowvale). Although I think this is similar to how we may say ''Oh, (my) God!''.

This ''Oh, God!'' thing is also said by secular people, so it can just be cultural. But since the player most likely grew up in a heavily Saradominist area some deviations of this could indicate a different persuasion. Then again, we must be careful because ''Zamorak's flaming nostrils! You believe this item exists?'' can also underline a Saradominist mindset, because Zamorak is largely depicted as evil and that fits the tone of the quote - imho. Anyway, interpretation is and stays difficult.

Come to think of it... I remember, I think it was the Nature Spirit quest, that the player seems to call for Guthix. Back in the day, Guthix used to be a more obscure god, so that could have indicated a more sincere persuasion, perhaps? But, regardless, I think the player is largely irreligious. Although I have no real quotes to back it up, the character certainly doesn't seem to strike me as some-one that went to church that often. The dialogue option seem to indicate that a little.. unlike Fred the Farmer, for example, who does include Saradomin in his usual way of talking. THe player refrains from it (for a roleplaying game design, it's an obvious take, but if we want to turn it into an argument for the player's (past) religious persuasion, I think it shows he's not a strong follower at least).

Continue in next post :P
Sorry, I just noticed i write a lot.

I think it's clear the player is not a Zamorakian, when talking to Dakh'thoulan Aegis: ''You're pretty nice for a Zamorakian.''

The player also wasn't a Zarosian, he learns of him after the Digsite quest. (Also suggested by the dialogue with the Wise Old Man.)

Further more, in the dialogue with the Wise Old Man, the player can ask:
Player: I heard that RuneScape used to have three gods.
Wise Old Man: Indeed. This was correct: Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak.

Player: How about Tumeken, Elidinis, Icthlarin and the Devourer?
Wise Old Man: What names are these?
Player: Down in Sophanem, they've got a chief god named Tumeken, plus a fertility goddess named Elindis. Icthlarin is their god of the dead and the Devourer...

I conclude from this that the player was not aware of the Desert gods before the quests were done. It may also seem as if the player was, until 'recently', unaware of these three gods (and until then, completely unaware of all the other gods). It can also indicate that the player only knew of one (most likely Saradomin) or two (where Zamorak is something like the Devil).

Last post about the players place of origin...
