The man stood before the window, staring outwards as the last rays of sunlight faded. Once again, he found himself pondering the idea that had recently occurred to him.
He decided to take a stroll to clear his head. Wandering the neighbourhood, he halted several times to enjoy the beauty of nature. Many of his neighbours were still outdoors at this early hour, but he knew that the familiar hush would soon descend upon the town.
He was old now, but his youth had been rather more exciting than most. Much of his life had been spent travelling the world, gathering wisdom and adventuring. He recalled with great fondness those adventurous daysů
He had done battle against countless terrifying beasts, saving lives and helping those in need. Time and time again, he had risked his life for the sake of others, but he always had the faith that his Lord Saradomin would protect him from harm.
Despite his heroic feats, he never received a proper financial reward, and he sometimes wondered if those he had rescued forgot about him in the end.
This had never mattered to him, though. He knew he had helped, and that was reward enough.
However, in his old age, he had found himself alone and in poverty. Had he been forgotten after all? His retirement was spent in stifling boredom, in a draughty and crumbling old shack, with scarcely a penny to spend on luxuries.
He wasnĺt starving, exactly. He still had enough to get him through each day and prevent the toned muscles of his youth from withering away entirely ľ Yet he could not recall the last time he had as much to eat as he would like, or anything apart from a peasantĺs meal.
He had resigned himself to his fate by now, but recently, a rather strange idea had entered his mind.
His entire life had been one of nobility and virtue, and he knew his Lord Saradomin would never approve of what he was considering.
While walking, he had unconsciously found himself returning to his house. He quietly entered and shut the door.
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you[...]For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

Did his life truly have to end this way? He contemplated the idea again, filled with shame all the while. It was a terrible thing to do. How could his mind have hatched such a wicked plot?
He seated himself, consumed by guilt and remorse. He tried telling himself that there was no other way; that all the good he had done during his entire life would more than make up for this one tiny incident, but this only made him feel worse.
Finally, he rose from his seat, his decision made. He took his old staff of Saradomin from the dusty corner where it rested and approached the door. He paused before his window, gazing once again at the bank across the street, unguarded and vulnerable. Again, guilt tore at him, but he attempted to calm himself.

After all, was a person truly guilty if he was only taking for himself what he was due?
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you[...]For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
