Mysterious and Secret Things

Over the past month we have had the following members join us.
That is seven new members. So far, of these seven, two can be said to be highly active in game, and one to be highly active in clan chat. This is not meant as a criticism since one of our clan's core values is: "Its all about fun, play the game your way and enjoy yourself."
However from a recruitment point of view I feel it is necessary to attempt recruiting a larger body of members who are active in chat. Potential recruits are more likely to join if, while guesting, they see a lively clan chat.
To this end our recruitment strategy must adapt. The current strategy is simply not attracting enough members at a fast enough rate. In my estimation we must reach a "critical mass" of 30 active clan chat members to ensure a reasonably busy clan chat.
I therefore suggestion a coordinated f2p recruitment campaign aimed at targeting potential members.
I leave this topic now open for discussion. Noob much? Help can be found here: Noobs unAnonymous
1) Bumping and updating our clan recruitment thread is not efficient. It does not recruit many people. It is therefore assigned secondary importance.
2) Attempting to recruit people in game is also inefficient. This is partly due to the high proportion of people who already belong in clans. It is also very time consuming. Especially when you spend time talking in game to virtual strangers only to discover after much chat that they are either not suitable or not interested.
Therefore what I wrote in the above post I now consider irrelevant.
3) Surprisingly there are are large number of people who use the forums to look for clans under the "clan wanted" section.
Therefore I have shifted the focus of our clan recruitment to the "clan wanted" section.
I am convinced that targeting the "clan wanted" section is now the most efficient means of recruiting a critical mass of highly active members.
It is my opinion that recruiting through the "clan wanted" section is a numbers game. In other words the more threads we post on the better our chances of attracting recruits. Therefore personalizing replies to posters is effectively a waste of time. People who insist upon receiving personalized posts are, in my opinion, generally not worth the effort due to their prima-donna status, and are unlikely to join a truly democratic clan of our nature anyway. With the occasional exception, I think it is better to copy paste 10 replies than to personalize one reply.
So far I have kept out copy paste posts simple and to the point with just a touch of bent humour. I also do not use colour extensively in my posts. This is to distance ourselves from the usual copy paste we see which details every single detail of a clan in an array of exceedingly annoying techno-coloured posts.
In this situation I believe Special Circumstances may provide assistance to furthering our recruitment. Noob much? Help can be found here: Noobs unAnonymous
SInce I joined in September I have noticed that the clan avatars are very rarely used by any of the admin+.
I make a point of getting an avatar out most days I am on line. In that time I have only ever seen one other admin+ with an avatar outside the citadel.
While our clan is still small (in terms of active members) this has not been a problem. But now we are beginning to recruit a steady trickle of new members. Most of these players are not maxed and therefore have the most to gain from the avatar boost.
Whether or not they have read our clan thread is irrelevant, the fact remains we have promised that avatars will be used fairly for the benefit of the clan.
I think it is necessary now to consider promoting some of our newer and most active members to an admin rank and warden status. Purely for the reason of getting our avatars out of the citadel and into the worlds where they can be of best use to our members.
The member who comes clearly to my mind as the most helpful and active is Blankies. He is constantly active in clan chat, frequently on line, consistent in his activity and is highly knowledgeable about the game.
I suggest we consider him for the admin role, if he is willing to accept it. Noob much? Help can be found here: Noobs unAnonymous
I will browse through the clan recruitment section and post on a few.
It would be nice to organise a clan event, maybe a welcome new clannies party in the party room of the citadel.
The problem is this.
1) No one reads the clan thread.
2) The nature of RS tends to encourage a lot of world hopping at times.
3) Everyone logs onto their own default homeworld.
The problem of the clan homeworld avatar is not an issue at the moment because we still have only a small base of active players. However as we continue to add a steady trickle of new recruits I can foresee this becoming more of an issue.
We must remember that for players who are maxed, or nearly maxed, the additional xp gained from the avatar is insignificant. However for the players in the mid levels, perhaps striving to reach some goal, the xp boost is significant and can in some circumstances save them a lot of time and gp.
We need to pay close attention to our lower leveled members and act when this becomes a significant issue.
In the meantime I will continue to take the ava out to world 134 as first option most of the time. Noob much? Help can be found here: Noobs unAnonymous

Insideher and Dr Bongface and Skyfallenkat.
Inslider has demonstrated his willingness to help clannies with PvM. There is much to be said for offering advice over the clan chat, but he has taken the time to organise a PVM trip and accompany clannies into battle, which is a whole level above just giving general advice. Having senior ranks actually helping in game is exactly what we need. Inslideher also offers convivial chat which adds to the positive atmosphere of the clan chat.
Dr Bongface has been very active on the recruitment forums and his efforts have had immediate results. The good Doctor is in fact the first clannie since I joined to have made a concrete effort to help recruit outside his immediate circle. In addition he shows an interest in clan politics which I feel will be useful in future.
When you see "clan politics" I am not speaking in terms of back room deals or bickering. By "clan politics" I mean the structures we have for ensuring fair decision making, fair rules, and protections against griefers and drama. The goal of "clan politics" is to ensure the continued success of our clan and to protect its core values ( as set in our clan's motto ).
Skyfallencat has personally recruited a number of excellent people into our clan. She is constantly a pleasure to speak with in clan chat and adds to a positive chat environment. Furthermore, to my knowledge, she is a very long standing member of our clan.
Note: As I am approaching 99 in most skills I have not been taking the ava out nearly so much. I consider it better to encourage our lower stat players to do so, since they will gain the most benefit from it. However I have noticed that there are often times when one, or even both, avas are not being used. Therefore I see there is a need for more admins (with ava warden title). Noob much? I am going to outline some issues that I think we will need to address as our clan grows in size. These are open ended questions.
1) Who is permitted to rank members up?
At the moment it has been Sookie and me. If we permit other senior ranks to promote members then how do we ensure that they do so according to the criteria of our ranking system? Perhaps it would be better if only Sookie carries out promotions. That way we can say that promoting is the sole responsibility of the Leader.
2) How do we deal with the fact that our clan now consists of two distinct groups. Those who have joined in the past 3 months and those who joined before that. The number of new members active now surpasses the number of old members active.
The issue here is that many of the older members have senior ranks but unfortunately some do not carry out the functions of those positions while in game, while some have been inactive for prolonged periods of time. By contrast some of the junior ranks are making amazing contributions to our clan in terms of activity, contribution to the clan chat, and being helpful to new clannies.
I suggest two things here.
That we carefully define the requirements, roles and responsibilities of all ranks. Much like we have done recently with the rank of lieutenant.
Then, secondly, we adopt a form of dynamic ranking. Dynamic means changing. In short that means that changing a person's ranks depending upon that person's track record within the clan.
Now, demoting people is a thorny issue, yes, I appreciate that. Perhaps we want to avoid, somehow, any demotions at all. We must however think of ways we can approach this before it becomes a source of contention within our clan.
3) Getting people to post on our clan thread. Communication is the key to our long term survival as a clan. Dr Bongface and I will be discussing various ways we can encourage clannies to use the forums. We need concrete methods. Noob much? Help can be found here: Noobs unAnonymous
