Shiny Torts and Crystal Chomps should never have been as good as they were, to be blunt. 600k-700k xp per hour, with no buffs, is insanity, and the fact that it was possible to get over 2M/hr off of Torts with the right setup... yeah. It's shameful that it took this long to be fixed.

Yet any TH or Solomon issues are fixed in a heart beat but i suppose these are integral parts of the game.

Nerfed is not a very good word actually. They are "modernized" rather.
Yes, we lose some but we also gain some in this "hunter modernisation".
Catching butterflies and moths continuously using the Prifdinas thieving mechanism is a pretty good modernization to me. And you don't have to go to Prifdinas or Anachronia to enjoy this fruit of modernistion. It is pretty cool and more than make up for the tedious click intensive turtle and chimp trapping.

Compare the old Hunting XP/hr to other gathering skills. Woodcutting has an estimate of about 500k at best (supply runs). Fishing, 285k. Mining? Admittedly up to about 2M, but it requires paying out the nose for BA tickets, and is closer to 200k otherwise. Div has ~225k (not including the 146.8k from daily Caches which are already stupidly good).
You're looking at over double the base XP/hour for old Hunter compared to the other skills, even before buffs are factored in. Since the nerf is about 56%, that brings Hunter back into line with the other skills. This is long overdue.
Again, the real problem is that this should never have needed to happen in the first place. Torts/Chomps should never have been this good.
Well, that's all obvious, but they've only now decided to nerf it as it coincides with an update that is primarily about Hunter.
If they didn't release it alongside such an update, I wouldn't be as sceptical as I am now. Jagex has rarely cared about balance in the past, as evidenced by Warbands and Treasure Hunter.
