If you can't state a source for sure, there is a possibility you could be wrong, right? In which case it could be that Zaros's arrival was what started the Second Age.

Edit: Ah, now I've read what you said about Mod Jack. Hmm, what did Mod Jack actually say?

The Second Age began when Guthix went into his first slumber. That's gotta be in some quest somewhere...

We should all start keeping track of sources for important information like this more often :P

This is taken from the unofficial wiki page on the First Age:

"Year 4000 (approx.) - Guthix descends deep underground, beginning his slumber lasting about 6000 years. This marks the end of the First Age."

While I know you can't always trust the unofficial wiki, the dates seem oddly specific to just be made up, so it may be said somewhere though a source is not given.

The 4000 years thing is accurate, as it is from the Varrock Museum (then again, they aren't always right...):

The 1st Age is thought to have been 4,000 years long. The world of RuneScape is said to have been created by the gods Saradomin, Zamorak, and Guthix at the start of the 1st Age. However, recent evidence from a brave adventurer suggests that Zamorak was not a god at this point in time so would not have been able to create worlds. It's thought that for much of this time the gods were still in the process of forming the world and making the various lands, seas, plants, and animals. This map is our approximation of the lands at that time, based upon our existing knowledge of the world.

Obviously, the part where Saradomin and Zamorak create the world in the First Age is wrong. Too bad most of RuneScape's population still believe that... As far as I know Guthix's first slumber ended the First Age and began the Second and Zaros arrived after most other gods in the early Second Age. There were no major gods other than Guthix and Seren in the First Age, but it's possible there were minor deities that were never noticed by Guthix, or not deemed a threat to mortal life, such as Brassica Prime, or the Karamjan god(s).

The sources for this I cannot be bothered to look up: probably a combination of God Letters, postbags, lore from very early parts of the game, and Jmod stuff (Paul's official timeline perhaps). I'm absolutely confident it cannot be wrong though; if the vast majority of players and jmods believe this to be true and stick to it, there is simply no possibility that someone made it up...

By the way, the museum says Guthix was the only god interested in Gielinor in the First Age. Makes sense: the historians of Varrock can't have known about Seren. This also places the arrival of all other gods in the Second Age, after Guthix's descent.

Here, you can see a tablet displaying an artist's impression of the portal through which humans first stepped on to RuneScape. It was said that Guthix himself walked among humans, providing rune stones, after which man first named this world. Guthix supposedly created the portal to bring humans from another world to populate RuneScape, at a time when he was the only god interested in developing Gielinor.

It isn't anywhere nothing states why the second age began.

@Kitty there was about twitter conversation about the Mahjarrat timeline and we had all the dates worked out down to the second ritual but Jack said no they didn't arrive that early and said the other gods had established their holds before Zaros got there. Basically it was a big conversation and he arrived after all the other gods in the second age. Maybe not Bandos though cause we have some inconclusive stuff about him in the second age.

@Zircon a book written by Elves who themselves do not know the full story. Also who is to say when this emptiness was felt it did not encroach anywhere near the elves until the very late second age just before the betrayal.

I have a question that was on my mind for a while... I can't be sure where I heard it in-game. Maybe one of the gods commented on that during MPD?

Question
Are gods (barring Zaros and Seren) aware of Elder Gods' existence or thought them to be myths and legends at this point, since they've never seen them nor have much knowledge of them?

Armadyl said "It doesn't take an Elder god to work that out," to Bandos.

Sliske also says "Well, I happened to come across a couple of items. Artefacts, you might say. Of the elder variety."

To which Armadyl says "The elder god artefacts are not toys for your amusement, Sliske!"

Even Guthix seemed to know about them.

Guthix knew about them and Armadyl does. It's likely that Saradomin, Bandos, and Zamorak are aware of them as well, as they didn't react at all to Armadyl's comment in MPD, which mentioned 'elder god'.

Well, yes, but Guthix also had the same vague ideas of Elder gods when he used the sword - he obtained a few details but most importantly - the artifects were left behind by elder gods. I don't think they really know much of elder gods, other than vague information from using elder artifects. If anything, Sliske's likely to know more about Elder Gods than other gods because he's aiming for knowledge, not power like others did.

So Armadyl's quotes about Elder Gods isn't solid enough, IMO.

1) Will we ever get the full story behind the temple that Tarn hid out in?

2) Who/what was Flamtaer?

3) What happened to the Nothing we use to see around the edges of the map? Is it ever coming back?

1) Seeing as how full of traps it is, I would imagine he built it, or at least part of it, for privacy in his studies.

2) Flamtaer is a temple.

3) Why would you want that back? The world looks much smoother now.
