Here's the thing. I have recently gotten into OSRS, and I'm loving the nostalgia. However, I do feel like I'm "cheating" on my RS3 account by not continuing to skill/merch/etc, because I have to choose to either play one or the other.

Perhaps the reasons for not allowing both games to be played simultaneously on the same account is due to security reasons. However, RS already requires two-step verification; if we were really looking after security, couldn't we add some sort of two-step in-game verification? I.e. if someone / you log in to both games at the same time, one or the other gets a notification to either allow or deny it.

Perhaps the reason is due to Jagex not wanting pay-to-play players to double-dip by playing both games at the same time? If this is the case, then what about all of those multi-account users who simply trade bonds between each of their accounts?

I would love to be able to play both games at the same time; work on skilling on the newer OSRS account, while working on making it rain on the older RS3 account.

Pretty, pretty please? :D

The reason is engine issues.

For example, the game system can't handle which world to use for clan chats/pm systems if your account is populated in an OSRS and RS3 world.

The game just wasn't designed to work this way, it was the same for funorb. You couldn't use the same account on funorb and runescape, at the same time anyway.

Everything you have on your account, from the name to the items in your bank, are recorded in the profile that is stored in the main database. When you log into a server, that profile is transferred. The profile is the same for rs3 and os, so it can only be transfer to one server at a time. Stop being a entitled snowflake. If you want something in game, earn it rather than demand it be given to you.

Based on 4EV's comments above, looks like it's impossible - but I just wanted to comment to say how much I love this idea.

I left Runescape in 2007 and rediscovered the game this year and I wanted to jump straight into OSRS but when i've logged into RS3 rarely, i've loved looking around at how much the world has developed compared to when I started in 2001.

I'd like to explore RS3 a bit more but want to keep training on OSRS. This would be a great solution. I'd be open to paying members twice and having both apps open but... would be great to keep it all on one name.

It seems to me like PM confusion shouldn't be much of a problem in practice. PM's could come from "Loosy" on world 14, or "Loosy" on world 304 without causing confusion or issue (at least in my mind). A short tagline such as "RS3" or "OSRS" at the end of the player's name could reduce any potential for confusion. I.e.
From Loosy (RS3):
. Seems like this would only require the game to recognize which servers are designated RS3 or OSRS, and add the tag accordingly.

Even clan chats with their different structures between games don't seem to pose an issue (again in my mind), since a player on OS doesn't even show up in the online clan list of an RS3 clan and vice-versa. Business as usual, right? Maybe?

As for banks, there's obviously enough keys or tags or whatever to separate account data based on which version is being played. There must be a way to further exploit the differences to allow for one account to play both platforms at the same time.....right?

Again, I really have no idea how the games are setup to distinguish player data, nor how it's used and interpreted on each platform, so I'm not in any position to say one way or another on the matter. BUT, I am very interested in taking part in a discussion of how we could make this a reality, or even volunteer time to test things out in some closed environment, so as to only take up a minimal amount of Jagex time.

Count me in as part of the task force to make this happen. :D

The jmod explained it a long time ago. A lot of thing a change the profile. THAT is profile is TRANSFERED to the server you are playing on. This means everything is moved from the main computer's database and the server's database when you log in. They can not move it two places at the same time because both of them can change the profile.

You have to remember when the engine was created, there was only one game. Had he foreseen the future, he might have created the engine differently, but it would take a massive rework of BOTH engines to change it.
