°ï¦ï° What is in-game roleplay °ï¦ï°

In-game roleplay is when you create your own character with a role and backstory into the world of Gielinor, to interact with other like-minded folk and their characters. The designated worlds for this are 42 (members), 41 (non-members), 342 (OSRS) and 382 (non-members OSRS).

The core of roleplaying is via actions and dialogue: a simple guide on how to structure both of these is here. Simply put, once you denote yourself as being ‘In-Character’, your following chat text will be understood as being representative of your character's words and actions.

Other players will provide your character interactions and character development, which is essentially what role-playing is: one big story written and narrated by the players themselves.

°ï¦ï° How to find In-Game RP °ï¦ï°

To get started with finding in-game roleplay, most people look onto this section of the forums. In general, you’ll find groups that use threads to advertise and show you their roleplaying group, with information on how to get involved with them enclosed within.

There are some roleplay groups without threads, however, who prefer to advertise themselves in-game and tell you the details of their group there instead. The RS3 groups can often be found advertising in Falador; a location where roleplayers frequently gather. Roleplayers often convene here, whether to simply idle and chat with other fellow roleplayers or to begin creating roleplay themselves. Most roleplayers here will also be willing to help any new member of the community out - be it by inviting you along to a group or just by pointing you in the right direction.

The roleplay groups on this game all have their own methods of creating roleplay. Some groups have a Discord where they announce their events, while some groups go by clan chat or friend chat announcements in-game. One of these groups is the OSRS roleplay community and is easily found through their thread hosted by Wizard Ovi. They also have a Discord server and you can even try finding out-of-character roleplayers standing in Varrock sometimes.

°ï¦ï°
Small tips:

• Generally, the best times for role-play tend to be between 10PM - Midnight GMT, or 5PM - 7PM EST. These are good times as they are before European people might sleep, and when north American people are home/off work/school. Keep in mind that not all Americans use the same timezone too.

• Joining a group is a great way to get involved and starting your own is always an option. That doesn't mean you can't freely roam between already established roleplay groups on your own as a freelancer.

°ï¦ï° Types of in-game roleplay. °ï¦ï°

To keep things brief, here is a list of many, but certainly not all, opportunities to get involved with in-game roleplay. Rate of appearance with these differ on a day to day base. Thankfully there is always the chance of starting something in-game yourself!

°ï¦ï°
The list

• Barpee

Bar or tavern based roleplay that is there to stimulate character interaction in a casual environment. Often created by kingdom based roleplays and friend groups to be open to all who are in the mood to join them.

• Combat focused
Some people on the server are all about having their characters fight with the things they interact with. This can be things like monsters created by a roleplay host or even with other roleplayers, as they let their characters fight.

• Magic focused
These types of roleplay are mostly based around characters that are mages or magic users. Because the magic you get to use in RuneScape is diverse and low in creative limitations, you’ll often see this type of roleplay being the focus for an entire group.

• Events
Roleplay groups tend to host small one off events. Armies clashing, festivals being held, royalty being married and antagonist attacks are just a few of the many events people host in-game. Respective groups you are involved with will often announce these in their Discord channel or in their in-game chats.

• Plots
A step further than events are longer ongoing plots. Plots have been carefully planned and written for the sake of creating a more story oriented experience. Often a broad concept of the story has been plotted out so that the characters involved acquire story development as they go through the plot.

• Kingdom interaction
A part of the community acknowledges the players to be the leaders of the kingdoms in Gielinor instead of their respective NPCs. Kingdom interaction can differ from wars between two kingdoms, to a political negotiation about trade and alliances or to a raid on a nearby settlement. Be aware that not everyone acknowledges these player-leaders and that some people even concider this part of the community as a private section.

• Sandbox or Private role-play
A sandbox/private roleplay is one set outside the mainstream scenes of roleplay. These can range from just simply being closed-off roleplays, or span into lorebending/lorebreaking adventures. Due to the adverse conditions usually at play within these roleplays, they are not considered as canon by the broader community.

°ï¦ï°
Small tips:

• Roleplay groups often do not stick to just one type of roleplay. Groups can all host events, create private plots and create a Barpee while still sticking to their group themes.

• Just because magic roleplay is not under combat focused roleplay on this thread, it doesn’t mean combat is completely absent. Mages fight, plot bosses fight, rowdy drunkards fight.

• The term private roleplay can also be used to describe roleplay groups that have requirements to who can join. These can range from fitting the application demands on a forum thread to getting directly invited by the group itself.

You can never be forced to acknowledge a player-leader. You can always interact with player-leaders though and you can simply edit/void certain things to make your story fluent without discrediting someone's character's role in the story.

°ï¦ï° Symbols used for In-Game Roleplay °ï¦ï°

To make sure we use the RuneScape chatbox to its fullest potential, we use symbols. The text put between those symbols indicates how they should be interpreted by the other roleplayers.

• In-Character and Out-Of-Character.
Also called IC and OOC, these abbreviations are used to indicate your presence in the RP world.

• Actions
Most roleplayers go by the use of the asterisk/hyphen ( * - ) for actions. This is how you make your character punch, run, cast, etc. Some people also do not use * or -, and instead structure it as you would conventional writing.

• Speech
Speech will be put into quotation marks (“…’’). For roleplayers using asterisks/hyphens for actions, typing speech with marks becomes optional but still recommended.

°ï¦ï° Balance and compromise °ï¦ï°

You’re not going to be alone when you roleplay. Other players will be there to offer all kinds of interaction for your characters, but sometimes interaction can be a delicate matter. To help you on your way in having an as positive experience interacting with others, some tips:

• Your character
Make sure your interaction does not feel one-sided or illogical to another party. To prevent this, people often keep characters within Jagex lore and on an acceptable power level for interaction with a wider audience. Making sure that your character is fitting for the group you join will influence your roleplaying experience.

• Yourself
A character is not who you are out-of-character. Using out-of-character knowledge to get an in-character advantage over others is heavily frowned upon. It is also important to never take an in-character insult or any other negative action aimed at your character personally. What happens in-character should be shifted onto the characters, not the roleplayers.

• The others
You never get to perform actions for someone else’s character unless they allow so. Make sure the other players have a chance to respond properly. That being said, character injuries and even death are parts of the experience too. Each group has their ways of dealing with those, ranging from creating a new character to downscaling lethal injuries into non-lethal wounds.

°ï¦ï°
Small tips:

• Not all groups are as strict about what sort of character is acceptable to join. Take your time into finding out which group is best for you and your character.

• If issue arise between you and someone else on the server due to interaction in-character, try to work things out in private. If there’s no option in talking things over, try to avoid each other instead of asserting yourself onto someone or a group.

°ï¦ï° The dynamics of the roleplay community °ï¦ï°

• Character History

Over the years, different people have had their characters interact, families created and plots held. You’ll notice that the already present players often have characters with ties to these former events and roleplays that were held. Don't be afraid to ask about any event you don't know about; it'll help you get more immersed with our community.

Similarly, the roleplayers have also created their own history. Naturally this can lead to some tension or disagreement. Groups have come up with solutions to make sure these disagreements do not spoil the fun of roleplaying. You’ll notice that it differs from group to group on how they do this: if you like to know, simply ask your group's leader.

• The roleplay worlds

Within W42/W41, all roleplay is generally understood to exist within the same universe. That's not to say that all roleplay is open to everyone. There are sometimes private roleplays that exists within the shared universe. This could be a private plot or even just a meeting behind locked doors.

Jagex, too, continues to add more content to the game of RuneScape. The degree to which roleplay is impacted by events in the game and elsewhere in 42 vary from group to group. Quest content, books of lore, world events, new regions and even the answers off a lore Q&A can have an impact on how the roleplay world function to some whilst being considered inconsequential to others.

As the story of Jagex progresses members of the community adapt around it. Some accept the NPCs to be the faction heads and leaders of Gielinor so that the story can be consistent for all who wish to roleplay with them. Others prefer the choice of players replacing the NPC leaders in order to move beyond the stories of Jagex by installing themselves as kings and queens. Neither form is subordinate to the other.

°ï¦ï° Tips for in-game roleplaying °ï¦ï°

Here are just a few guidelines that we'd like to reminder players to try and follow, out of respect for themselves and other players; See these as tips to keep things fun for yourself.

• RuneScape Rules Apply
The usual stuff, which means both in-game and on the forums. See the links provided to read up on these.

• Language
Bad language is against the Forum Rules and certain words in-game are still punished with small time mutes. Experience shows that muted players have a harder time getting involved in roleplay.

• Appropriate Topics
Use a bit of common sense, and keep topics appropriate for ages for our community's language at around 13. People that want to do things that go beyond this often agree upon this in private or within their group.

• Naming and Shaming
If you're recounting an event that paints anyone in a negative light, think twice before posting. These things often spiral out of control and are better solved in private.

• Alternate accounts
Though harmless when used to portray a multitude of characters at a given time, the creation of a fake online persona behind an alt-account is heavily frowned upon.
Your actions may be ignored due to this being deemed unethical

• Trolling and Spam
Both on the forums and in-game this is generally frowned upon.

• Split Canon
Some groups want to use the same land/kingdom for their own narrative and have chosen to ignore other groups by fostering the idea of a canon split. These groups interact with a select group only so be aware of that before joining one.

• NPC leadership
Some people do not like the more traditional way of acknowledging player-leaders instead of an NPC and simply roleplay people lower on the social ladder like nobles or guildleaders should they want to lead something. Never powerplay an NPC though!

°ï¦ï° Further Help °ï¦ï°

There is of course far more to read out there. The In-Game Roleplay forums are filled with group threads, handy guides and other general information about what is happening in RuneScape roleplay community in general.

This is but a small introduction, a welcome, to RSRP. For an attempt at more in-depth information on how to smoothly get involved in roleplay on RuneScape, try reading the
In-Game RolePlay Guide & Help. This is a much more opinionated and controversial thread but the current host still provides a handful of insights and proposals on how you could partake in roleplay on W42 (Members) specifically.

Be sure to have a look at the official Jagex In-Game Roleplay forum rules to save yourself some trouble ahead. Jagex forum specific rules.

Hopefully, this thread has provided you with a solid base on how to get yourself involved in the RuneScape roleplay community. If you still have some questions about how you can get involved with the community(s), don't hesitate to ask your questions on this thread.
