A straight answer would be "yes" but it may not be as simple as it seems.

As you may know, demons are summoned to Gielinor by powerful mages - or, if they're powerful enough, they can build portals and travel between infernus and Gielinor. When they're hurt enough, their bodies explode to dust, but most of the times they're not killed completely. From what I've learned, it depends on how much of the demon was summoned to Gielinor. If the demon's essence was not completely summoned, the rest of it remains on infernus.

We also know that demons are known to get hurt when trespassing the barrier between infernus and Gielinor. And this is the interesting part. Demon Generals often come to Gielinor to spread terror, but they're not summoned, they build their own portals and come on their own. So I assume all their essence travels with them. This might mean that when they're killed, they're not returned to Infernus.

Now let's look at Thammaron's case. He did more or less what demon flash mobs do. For those who don't know - you learn this on The Golem quest - back in the god wars Thammaron was a zamorakian general. His goal was to destroy Uzer and he was tricky enough to engineer a nearly flawless plan, by building a portal below the temple of the city, that way his army attacked the impregnable city. They overwhelmed the soldiers and were nearly victorious, if it wasn't for the golem army. The golems wounded Thammaron so much that he had to return to his throne room, on infernus. We have no idea if he was further weakened - or strengthened - by returning home. He later slowly died from his wounds. This is the weird part. I know The Golem was one of the first quests of Runescape so the developers didn't know what they know now (I think it needs a revision). I think Thammaron was far too strong to die just like that. Maybe he consumed another demon (like flash mobs do) to heal himself a bit, and the skeleton in his place is just one of his underlings?

Share your thoughts. Lore wise, he's probably dead, but I'd like to think the other way. I think he has great potential and the events on The Golem are outdated in my opinion, hence why I think it should be re-made. Also, since we're talking about elder demons, what has become of
Zebub
? We have no record of any defeat from him, but he simply disappeared from the map. It seems today like he never existed.

Weak as he was, maybe someone got to him and drain his essence ? If someone was stupid enough to try using it on them self there is no telling what the end result would have been.
That's a very interesting theory. This is not related to RS, but it reminds me of a chapter on hellboy where a weak minded mage manages to siphon most of the energy from a goddess. The power was too great for him and he became a giant monster (think of hostillius, but far smaller), unable to control any of the energy he got.
From your theory, we could assume a lesser demon siphoned his remaining energy and either became much stronger or resulted in an abomination, but anything's possible. I hope Jagex team shed some light on this.

Demons will either come to Gielinor through a portal, or project their forms onto something from the safety of Infernus (which is likely the case with waterfiends and gargoyles - demons projected onto constructs of water and stone). If they come to Gielinor through a portal, they are leaving Infernus and risking their lives permanently, but are theoretically more powerful since they are actually ON the planet. If they're projecting, then destroying their form is just a temporary banishment and they can reform. If I recall, Thammaron was actually ON Gielinor instead of projecting, so if he died, he's gone for good. Mods pls notice me

And regarding Thammaron (as well as the flash mobs) I don't think they "just" travel to Gielinor like that, a strong adversary always has a plan B. I assume they leave part of their essence on Infernus in case something goes wrong on Gielinor. They can't be that stupid to completely leave their home plane just for more strength. Unless Thammaron was over confident.

True, but what about flash mobs? They basically do the same Thammaron did, and they blow up in ashes when defeated... I'm also thinking of the possibility of powerful demons leaving part of their being on infernus when travelling throught portals... But only a mod can answer this I guess.

Pretty idiotic from Thammaron then, but again as said before, maybe he was just overconfident and when realized his mistake it was too late.
All I don't get is his "slow death" and all. Powerful as he was, he could've just consumed other demon buttlers/non soldiers in his castle or called zamorak for help.

I think a demon turns to ashes regardless of if they're a projection or not. Born from the flames and all. That said, I don't think we see flash mobs entering through portals do we? I've never checked them out, so, if not, they're probably just spawning their projections in those locations.
And I don't think Avernics can consume to empower themselves like a Chthonian can? Obviously they can consume things, but I don't think it's nearly the same as what a Chthonian demon does, so Thammaron eating his servants wouldn't have saved him. That said, he still could have called for help.

Also, Thammaron probably came to Gielinor because he'd be much more powerful that way - their forms are less powerful if projected.
