Speculation time!

My thoughts are under the assumption that the Gemstone Dragons were an experiment by a Dragonkin as dragons typically are.
I wonder what the Dragonkin who created them had on mind before beginning the experiment.

First thing that comes to mind is that gems appear to have a notable tendancy of being able to be enchanted, an ability to hold/be affected by a greater amount of magic than other items.

Perhaps these were an experiment for creating dragons that could grasp a much larger hold on magic than most other regular dragons, possibly being able to further enhance these types of dragons with magic that would be ineffective on regular-scaled or metal-scaled dragons.

Now onto the location, it is a cave within Karamja, and it's not unlikely that more Dragonkin experiments took place since the Brimhaven Dungeon upon the same island is a known place of previous Dragonkin residence.

Within the cave the dragons are surrounded by a vast amount of natural gems, a perfect place to experiment with the crystals. It would make sense that somewhere in the cave there could be a hidden area which a Dragonkin's experiments took place, with the living experimental gemstone dragons placed outside in the area which we can access potentially acting as protection from any 'explorative' guests.

Any other thoughts on this?

Fair theory with the map comparisons.

And I like the under-Dragonstone gem theory you have.

I know that Onyxes are at least not entirely limited to the Tzhaar as they can be found within the Gem Rocks at Prifddinas.
Hydrixes I've no idea if they have lore behind them as stated in a stream or something, I'm not sure where to find out more than that.

I just assumed that the caves where the Gemstone Dragons reside contain natural gem formations and that source of them is where the Dragonkin received the gems for the experimentation. (And the reason why the Gemstone Dragons are found there.)

Though about the Adamant Dragon bones I don't believe they should be counted thus far.
They were a hotfix until Jagex can rename the bones to something more encompassing.
