I was just wondering what quests are canon in both OSRS and RS3? "Oh, yes! I may hold the imformation you require...
I'm the slayer of dragons! The caster of ancient magic! Seducer of women! And eater of goldfish crackers..."

i was curious about this too, the more i grow interested in rs 3 lore, i equally grow interested in the timeline lore of oldschool. it would be very neat if they linked the 2 properly and continued a canon story in it aswell instead of just jumping back into the past and going a seperate route

Every quest that was in OSRS at the time of its release is also canon in RS3 with few exceptions.

In RS3, Romeo & Juliet was reworked into Gunnar's Ground, so the canonicity of Romeo & Juliet is questionable in RS3. Similarly: Doric's Quest was replaced with What's Mine is Your's; Prince Ali Rescue was replaced with Stolen Hearts and Diamond in the Rough (this also caused minor changes to Icthlarin's Little Helper); and Black Knight's Fortress was replaced with Death of Chivalry (this caused minor changes to Recruitment Drive).

Several quests were also heavily reworked which calls into question whether their original events and any past events referred to during them canonically happened in RS3. These include: Druidic Ritual; Death Plateau; Demon Slayer; Rune Mysteries; and Cook's Assistant.

Also worth noting that, so far at least, the OSRS and RS3 teams appear to deliberately avoid outright contradicting each other regarding any events that occurred prior to year 169 of the 5th age (the year the events in RuneScape took place during until after The World Wakes was released) which leaves a distinct possibility that any events referred to in either game that occurred during or before 168 of the 5th age are canon in both games (this weirdly includes the RS3 World Guardian appearing and speaking to Guthix immediately prior to Guthix's attempt to banish Seren from Gielinor at the end of the 3rd age, which does work by some time travel rule sets but is still strange to think about).

@MiniMike158,

I really couldn't agree with you more. I'm one of the few players that plays both Old School Runescape and Runescape 3. I played inbetween the eras of RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape around 2009-2013 and recently returned to RuneScape after a long break and noticed their is a huge difference in quests and even lore. I feel like they're very separated in canon. I don't really know why this is; I can't really put my finger on it.

@Hguoh,

Thank you so much for your reply. That really helps me a lot, but one thing is that I only played seriously around 2010-2011 and have recently returned with a big interest in RS lore, but I'm noticing I have most of those quests done already on both versions, probably because they're beginner or easy level quests. I wish there was a way to redo them with having to create a whole new email and account.

Some quests released after 2007 may also be relevant. For example, Land of the Goblins and The Path of Glouphrie are almost entirely coded into OS but haven't been released. I suppose you could count them "almost canon" but they aren't, technically.

The Myreque quest series from Legacy of Seergaze onward is not present in OS, but the latter's own Myreque quests follow a similar plot that only differs in the details and gameplay.

Otherwise, there isn't much overlap apart from incidental things. For instance, compare Beneath Ice Mountain to Defender of Varrock.
Bizarre Boron Fusswell, scryer extraordinaire. OSRS: POH ideas & RS3 minigames & achievement ideas!

Perhaps you're half right; perhaps we can't win. But we can fight.
