I've had this idea in my head for quite a while now and as a frequent player of Tetris 99 and Pacman 99 on the switch (as well as the occasional Fortnite match) I thought... what if Runescape had some kind of Battle Royale minigame (deaths would be safe and players could either bring their own supplies or choose supplies to have given to them, up to Jagex on that one)

As an example, to do a Fight Caves Battle royale, you'd right click the Fight Caves and instead of going in normally you click an option for Battle Royale then you'd be paired up with other players who have also right clicked the Caves to choose the same option, then you'd all be thrown in to the Fight Caves (maybe not doing all waves from 1 to 63 as it'd be too long to get to powerful monsters, I was thinking maybe there are 16 or so waves, including 63, that a player can vote for, any wave that is voted for will show up at some point, the order that all players go through the Fight Caves waves would then be predetermined before the Royale Starts.

How would it work? Well everytime you kill a Fight Caves monster, it would be sent over and spawned into whatever wave another player is in, targeting options (of who you will send monsters that you kill over to) would be "player with the most supplies left", "player with the least hp", "Attackers" (would send an enemy to everyone who has you targeted) and Random, as well as an option to manually target any player (each player's screen, just of their avatar and monsters around them, would be visible to you).

This could work for other areas as well as Fight Caves, imagine a Battle Royale of Godwars (maybe an NPC at godwars entrance could send interested players to an GWD instance where the Royale takes place), the fun of sending Kree'aras to another player

I'd be interested to hear other player's thoughts/ideas to add to this :)

No support. Multiplayer Minigames are already pretty dead on RS3 outside of special circumstances like Spotlight (competitive ones, even moreso), and a Battle Royale game mode needs a large, active playerbase to continue to function, even more than the current minigames. I just don't see a scenario where a Battle Royale minigame ends up being more than a flash in the pan success that's abandoned within a month or two.

I'll admit that, if RS3 were to ever get a Battle Royale mode, a format like Tetris 99 or Mario 35 would probably be more successful than a raw PvP mode like OSRS's Last Man Standing would be. But at the end of the day, it would probably only be marginally more successful, and not enough to justify the development time/resources.

Perhaps having a designated Battle Royale world, in addition to making them Limited Time events with there being a few a year (so exactly like dxp) would increase popularity, with ingame notification on the first log in after the update is announced/made live to remind players.

In terms of whether or not the idea will be a flash in the pan and abadondoned in a month or two, the only way to find out if that's the case is to see how it goes once the Royale is ingame :)

I've wanted to marry RuneScape's IP to other formats, like Battle Royale, Moba, RTS, tower defence...

I think there are some exceptionally well designed aspects of RuneScape which would translate well into other types of games: the combat triangle, armour/weapon tiers, special attacks, RuneScape's gods, RuneScape's cities, some iconic RuneScape quests...

But to me I'd want to see it as a stand alone game, not just another dead minigame. Why? Well I think a large portion of the RuneScape playerbase just isn't interested in these types of ideas, so putting them inside the main game is wasted on them, but additionally there is a substantial disdain for RuneScape from gamers outside of RuneScape who might be willing to try a different game just based on RuneScape's IP.

How do I imagine a RuneScape BR?

Players start randomly spread out across a simplified Gielinor. They have a bronze sword and wooden shield to start. They run around fighting other players, collecting materials to make armour and weapons, and opening hidden chests to find armour and weapons. There are no levels, or everyone is just max level. Hostile creatures close in from the edges of the map, with warnings to the player of their approach. If they reach you, you can fight back but inevitably you'll get killed by the NPC armies just like the gas or storm in other BRs.

Some significant differences to normal RuneScape: smaller inventory (maybe 5 slots), dedicated resource slots(like fortnite) for generic 'metal', 'leather' and 'cloth', universal crafting locations for making gear instead of anvils/tanners/looms, no accuracy penalty for weapon/armour mismatch or automatic armour switching to match weapon switching...

This would probably be the better way to go about it, but unfortunately Jagex hasn't had a lot of luck with branching out into other genres with the RuneScape IP. Chronicle and Idle Adventures didn't survive very long, and aside from OSRS, Jagex in general has a long history of struggling to keep any project that isn't the original RuneScape game afloat.

Could a RuneScape-themed Battle Royale standalone game survive, let alone thrive? Maybe, but I wouldn't put money on it.

Yeah that could work very well!

Battle Royal in Runescape would be another minigame where you have to wait in a lobby to enter, the remaining players would have to wait for enough people to play again. There would have to be a dedicated world to do battle royale and the rewards would have to be worth it enough for players to keep coming back. Mainly number in-game rewards that work to everyday things we do in RS and then secondly, battle royal upgrades I would assume.

As far as the actual content goes, I cant imagine BR in RS as it takes up a lot of space. Maybe have a mini-version of BR, I could imagine that. It would be a solo BR for sure to start, maybe a duo or trio at the most, as its a minigame... so, I mean you want to have as much available games as possible. I would say 25 players a game. Actual content... it would be BR style, pick up armour, weapons, food/potions, and get goin. That sounds kinda bland even if there were obstacles. Maybe throw in monsters to attack you too, and drop things to help you in the fight. I had a sort of BR post in the suggestions titled "RS content in POHs". (out dpsing players seems kind of bland but i would include it as like a side reward upon losing or winning a BR match).

If I had to come up with a BR minigame off the top of my head :
There would need to be an area large enough to hold 25 players but keep them separated. This is nearly impossible if you're trying to keep it a smaller sized update. So, I would have a safe area where you collect items for a period of time before entering the main area. It would be timed to collect items. Then, enter the main area or lose HP being in the collectors area. In the main area you would fend off monsters until enough players die (to keep the map size small). You wouldn't be able to attack other players. Then when its down to like 4 players, split them up in 1v1s and then a final 1v1 for the win.

A different idea :
Separate 24 players in 1v1s till a final 1v1 for the win (super small content ftw) and etc etc

It sounds like Last man standing in Oldschool RuneScape, but the difference between the two games are that Rs3 has a dead minigame community, with that said, minigames in RuneScape 3 is kinda outdated and since we've had the Thaler system, you can basically get Void (which isn't good anymore compared to other setups) through other minigames. Therefore I do belive that this update would be no more than waste of time developing.

With best regards,
Adam.
