Talk of this is coming up just as I've seen freelance kicking up the past three days. Were it a week ago, I'd agree, but the open freelance has lead to some off-worlders coming in and I'd really like for us to have somewhere to direct them.

Yeah, this thread is a gods damned encyclopedia instead of a handbook, and I can definitely start working on scrapping it all and rewriting it from the ground up instead of edits here and there, though that'll take a good amount of time. I remember comments saying Nat's was better than Faey's. With Nat's permission and a link to her guide I could plagiarize that instead of Faey's, but writing up an entire one of my own will take a while.

Also, holy cow, is that Jake defending something? :O

I won't lie. I wasn't seeing the forest for the trees when I made my own version. I just tried to make one very nice looking tree. Or...something. Probably stretching the metaphor here.

Anyways, I'm not saying to just straight delete the pinned threads although I think that very simple premise could actually work. A rework into something succinct without being authoritative can work. Something that only explains what happens here and how to join it. That's all. Just a direction for newbs to hop in as seamlessly as possible. Honestly, Conor's thread pretty much does this already. I haven't seen him in ages though, so it'd be best if the angle of his thread was maintained by someone active.

If anything I'd rather we bring back Rai's original 1st edition of the rp guide. I preferred it. Nat ruined it, if you ask me. I think shortening and reducing it further would be a mistake. Sure, Rai's was huge but it had great substance.

Also, in response to RiDaku, I've always been in support of tradition. I don't want to scrap or butcher a great guide because people don't reach out as much. Why they don't reach out to each other is for a whole new argument that'd turn nasty.

And Faey I don't think you have any right to express what you think after your little thread hand-off post about your pisspoor attitude towards 42.

.I mean, my namesake character is a bonafide deity that could literally kill someone by a clench of a fist intertwining telekinesis and blood magic in order to close a carotid artery. But me and my pals have fun anyways. I could say why people might find such a character fun to interact with, but that's not really the point, is it? Fun is fun and it's turning out that people are having fun despite breaking the "rules". So why have them at all?

No offence, but this is a prime example of why we need a standard though. Godmode or overpowered characters being used in the public realm should not be encouraged.

Yes, liberty and saying "sweet I can rp whatever I want" is cool, but not when everyone wants to be a new Zaros or something.

Your point is lost when there is hardly a public realm to speak of but irrelevant in the first place given this context.

Croco and I shared some thoughts because we see that this thread is now at odds with the way of things rather than complimentary to said way of things. Namely because almost all groups break a variety of these now rather irrelevant rules laid out in here, yet still have fun. Whatever abstract minimalist public realm remains in this day is subjected to such a phenomenon, too. Why, just the other day the Archmage of Kandarin vanquished a god lich thingummywut in an absurd duel in broad daylight and it was all well and fun.

Why do these rules exist? Why do rules in any sort of recreational activity exist? Rules exist to maintain an enjoyable environment. But are rules needed, then, when an enjoyable environment is maintained without observing said rules? No. There is no way that there can any other answer than no. You don't need what you don't need and all the different scenes are following such a trend. Rules are solutions to problems. But right now...there just aren't any problems on this front.

And the last thing anyone wants is for someone to get up in their face and tell them they're having a good time the wrong way. I know about this better than anyone else here, eh? Now, if you're not having a good time...then that would be the time to talk. However, in so far as us two are concerned, I can't remember the last time we even talked, nevermind played together. At no time, ever, has my chosen example ever given you a problem that needs a solution. It has not been a problem for anyone.

I did pick some low hanging fruit for my example because I believed the justification to be obvious. I'll explain now anyways.

The thematics revolving around my namesake character entail the sorrows, challenges, and ethics around godhood rather than some sort of power fantasy.

Subjects may include topics like; Existentialistic crisis spurred by the ability to toss around absurd amounts of power for short term change - but the experience to know that it would all be in vain in the long term. A life so traumatic that suicide is longed for some days but there is a literal inability to achieve it. Insane but benevolent endeavors alien in concept attracting the attention of other good people who simply can't understand. Finding love in spite of it all and being that much closer to the desire of just being a normal person.

I interweave these concepts into collaborative stories I form with my friends and it's complimented by a solid talent with writing that can weave this all into a compelling narrative.

But it was really silly to explain this all because fun is fun and only sad people raise objections to another person's complaisant happiness. RiDaku also has a god character and that's amusing.

So, moving on, I think a proper discussion could be had about the future of guides here - or even the prospective lack of future.

A character that doesn't mingle in public roleplay, and is reserved for either private or sandbox. As my characters raise in power they withdraw more and more from affecting the public because I recognize how awful that is for others to have to interact with. Yeah, I have a God character, and yeah it's great fun to play him and have him interact with certain people that either go out of their way to find him, or agree to interact with him prior. It's not great fun to have that character show up wherever I feel like having him show up and immediately make 90% of the characters in that roleplay worthless because now they can't do anything.

Yes. There are exceptions to the rules. But the rules are still in place, even if you don't think they are. People still follow them, they just don't fling them around because we all know what they are. People coming in, won't know. So we have them here.

Getting a feeling this has sidetracked too much on the removal of things where as I would like to see an upgrade of things. I agree with Faey in that there is no harm in at least having a good talk about what things can be improved and what things can be removed and I agree with Ridaku in that we shouldn't outright remove the one universal thing we can point newbies to.

The thread that Connor once made that Faey mentioned before just looks more complete, compact and more inviting for people to browse.
(Format troubles and being outdated aside)
Sure it doesn't learn you 'the ropes' of RP but at least it explains a bit more about the server dynamic which I personally think matters a lot these days.
(Faey already explained this well imo, so I'll just side with Faey's wall of text instead of writting up my own.)

I feel we really need something that combines the two threads into something that can offer more help to new roleplayers.
