The OSRS team investigating adding HD in no way validates that RL should be prevented from offering it. The only plausible motivation I can think of is that Jagex knows its client is bunk and that the only way it can possibly compete with third party clients is to offer a feature they can't - HD. The only plausible reasons I can think Jagex would care that its client is popular is because they either intend to somehow monetize the client (possibly through a plugin marketplace) or they wish to collect more detailed analytics from the client (or both). Both of these have value to a business and anyone arguing otherwise is lying to themselves. However, stopping your community developers from releasing features so that you can increase your client's usage is completely anti-competitive and reprehensible.

The community benefits immensely from bitter competition on client features, and as a result, Jagex benefits. If Jagex wishes their client be the most popular, then they need to invest in their client. If they lack the resources to do so, they need to invest in more resources (i.e engineers). If they are having trouble finding talent, they should open an office in the US and raise salaries. Stifling competition is an incredibly poor replacement for investment in oneself.

I'm glad to hear they went on a hiring spree, that's the wise thing to do! Writing the client in c++ was completely idiotic though - finding quality c++ devs, especially in the younger crowd, is an incredibly difficult challenge. Yes, it wouldn't take too long for an experienced dev to pick it up, but why would I waste my time picking up a skill that's not very portable to other companies? Java would have been the obvious choice for their client as this would have made it much easier to find engineers to work on the project.

> One thing you definitely need to realize is it takes years to make a new client with good functionality.

It can take years, but with a project like this, it's more of a manpower issue than anything. Furthermore, Runelite's client is open source and its license allows for Jagex to use that code themselves. If they wanted to put out a beefy client fast, the wise thing to do would be to clone RL and hire Adam to lead the project (I'm pretty sure that's the lead on RL). Even without Adam, cloning the project and working from there would have been a massive boost to productivity.
