OSRS has talked about removing Duel Arena yesterday, but the small print is it will not be any time soon.

What's everybody's thought? What do you think is the cause of the "removal" of the OSRS Duel Arena? Government regulations? Game Integrity/Balance issues? New direction of the game?

When will Sand Casino be "removed" IF OSRS truly mean to remove it? What will stakers do then? What will general maxed level players do for new endgame content then? Will they quit OSRS?

Besides, in the mean time before Sand Casino is "removed" (IF it is eventually), OSRS said they will impose a betting cap. What do you think that batting cap will be? 9000 bil or 90 mil? How does it affect you if you are a staker given previous issues have already put "Fair Bet" in that betting minigame?

Please tell us what do you think? :)

I think that it will take them about 2 years to implement, according to the Reddit posts. Some people are even suggesting that it may be longer and we'd actually have to wait to see when and if it's actually implemented. Having said that, I still think that the announcement is promising and very welcome at this very precise moment due to the dissatisfaction among players toward Sand Casino.

I'll add the Reddit post/thread below for those interested:

I think all of the reasons you gave are probably correct to some extent.

Government regulations: I'm not aware of any specific new legislation, but the idea that they are profiting from selling gambling to children could very easily take root in the minds of people that don't know anything about gaming/runescape, even though that's not really what happens in the sand casino. All it takes is one angry mother writing a letter to her MP, or one clickbait journalist writing a hatchet job article. So I would imagine this is a concern to them.

Game integrity: It's a massive source of scamming and RWT, along with the associated botting and gold farming that that brings, and they did say in the same stream that they are going to do much more to seriously tackle these issues.

New direction: I think part of it is simply that players, at least the vocal ones across social media, have been increasingly vocal in demanding that something is done about the dual arena. As much as people like to shit on the devs, they often listen to these things if they prove to be a lasting concern rather than a quick outrage that everyone forgets in a week or two.

As for time frame, I would guess late 2022 personally, given that they said it wasn't going to be soon. I think they would be very foolish to announce that they are definitely going to do something and then not do it for 2+ years, that would piss people off more than if they just didn't say anything at all.

There is no new regulation yet but the Online Safety Bill undoubtedly has Jagex thinking about Duties of Care. Not sure is it the cause, or one of the causes, for what OSRS said of the Sand Casino. Note that OSRS had made changes to Sand Casino including removing item betting in the past citing similar Duty of Care and RWT reason. The obvious and interesting point is RS3's Sand Casino isn't affected at all.

If Regulation requires it, then Sand Casino may close sooner than later. Otherwise, I have serious doubts OSRS will really close Sand Casino as they stand to lose a lot of revenue from players buying Bond MTX to gamble in Sand Casino. Alternatively, they may just put a high betting cap like 5 Bil gp and then say they have already done their fair part of Duties of Care.

I think the betting cap (if it actually comes) will tell how serious is OSRS's stance on Sand Casino. :)

IMO, this will be the death of RuneScape!. I feel this is what keeps drawing people back, people will riot. people will unsub and vote with their wallets and it will be reinstated.

Im not sure how they will replace such an old feature and keep all the old players happy.

Agreed.

Where else will ppl stake once this is removed?

Unlike rs3 there isnt any "second option" like duel anywhere for osrs so once this is gone, so will the only place for staking.

Whatever it is, this would be a major change.
They better make an official vote than just simply "talked about it in reddit/twitter/some live stream"

If they're removing it for game integrity issues, and to be honest I don't see any other reason, I think it's very unlikely there will be a vote.
