Gameplay area too dark

Hoping someone can help, feeling really frustrated here!

I logged into the game this morning to find that the gameplay area is so dark I can barely see anything. Last time I played (a couple of days ago) it was all fine. I've never seen this problem before.

The map, backpack, message area, all that stuff all looks fine, it is just the actual gameplay area (if that's the right term) which has this problem.

I've tried re-running Auto Setup for the graphics but that doesn't solve it. I even tried going to Low graphics settings but again, no luck. The Brightness on the graphics option is turned up fully.

I was in Lumbridge when I logged in so I tried going somewhere else. I teleported to Seers Village - darkness problem still existed BUT if I walked slightly south-east it would suddenly brighten, only to darken again if I walked still further.

A quick google has led me to an option if I right-click the globe beside the map - "skybox/filters" (I wasn't aware of this option until now!). It is set to 'Clear Skybox' - if I set it to 'Midday' the world brightens up a bit, but still doesn't look right.


Anybody have any ideas? Like I said, last time I played it was all fine.

Can you please show a screenshot of the issue?

Graphical artifacts may occur if your graphics drivers are outdated. See this page for more.
Compatibility issues

Artifacts can at times be resolved by clearing client cache. Sit in the lobby for 30-60 minutes and log back in. :)

I gave up with it this morning so I've just tried logging back in again to the game and - it seems to be back to normal, even though I didn't change anything?!

So fingers and toes crossed it is okay, but if it goes wrong again I shall try the things you suggested.

I'm still curious as to what it was though... O_o

I'm at loss, too - if it happens again with the above steps done, I recommend you make a bug report!

You can also create a support ticket, if you want to hear Jagex on this.

I have the same issue. Clearing the cache and deleting and reloading the client has not helped. I first noticed this noonish game time and still ongoing as of 10 hours later.

Are we all on Windows? Were we affected by the lockout? I was.

There is currently a graphics issue going around that Jagex is working to fix.

See if you can teleport out. If you don't see your lodestone teleport icon, then right click around your screen until you locate it, and teleport somewhere else.
You can also press T, B. This opens teleport interface and teleports you to Burthrope after ~10 seconds.
If you're able to teleport out, avoid the location you were bugged at previously and simply play in other areas until the issue has been patched :)
