Below is a quote of a post by ImRubic (Reddit user who normally handles the TL;DW after-stream information threads):

https://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/8j95jj/due_to_the_rs4_nextgen_and_runescape_remastered/

Runescape Remastered
Game Focus
- Takes place at the end of the 6th Age.
- Open more expansive world with the removal of the blocky grid-system/0.6 second tick system.
- Added height features and a more 3D world than RS3 (think of Skyrim).
- Allows for Offline skill training.
To be Determined
An ability to shapeshift into a variety of NPCs/content.
- Community oriented markets, cities, and other mechanics.
- World roaming bosses for PvM.
- Unique PvP interactions across the game world.
This is all that I remember being mentioned, but I may have left something out.

EDIT: This information was provided in a survey only given to several people. I wasn't provided it but I was able to get my hands on it. I can provide a link to the now ended survey but you can't see anything.

Yep – this is something we are working on! However, what I want to emphasise is that these projects are in an early pre-production phase. Whilst they’re pretty exciting, cool ideas we can’t guarantee they’ll be put into full scale production (though we hope so!).

The work being done on these ideas is being carried out by a separate team to the ones which develop RuneScape; there’s no need to worry about us reducing our efforts on our flagship game!

Of course, we are always looking for ways to expand the RuneScape universe for new territories and on new platforms - we hope these projects attract others to the RuneScape franchise, and we hope you enjoy them too. Rest assured though, these titles won't distract from the games you love, just add to them!

Honestly, there’s not much else to say about the projects. They’re both at an early stage, but if the ideas do progress beyond the current stage then we will – of course - share relevant details with you guys.

EDIT: Some people have commented with concerns this will replace RuneScape or mean they lose their progress. To clarify - this game is not designed to replace RuneScape at all. It is not RS4, it would be a new game using the RuneScape brand. RuneScape and your progress within RuneScape is here to stay!

It would, because you read it. And everything you read seems bad to you. I mean seriously, if they discovered the game had equippable swords, you'd complain because that's your stock generic response.

In fact I'm not even convinced you read the posts you respond to; you just hit the quote button, tag an insult on the end and hit post.

So before you utterly destroy yet another topic with your drivel, I'm going to make one thing pointedly clear: I refuse to respond to any further posts by you in this thread, and I implore anyone else in this thread that has a shred of decency to do the same. Don't fall for the bait, and maybe we can keep this thread on-topic.

So, brief but unfortunately necessary diversion aside, let's get back to the topic: RuneScape Remastered.

What could possibly be bad about an improved RuneScape with all these wonderful features?

Well, the fact that it's not going to be the RuneScape we're playing.

EoC was a disaster because many players were mad as all the hard work they had done was devalued. OSRS came later, but it wasn't satisfying, because players had to start over.

So this time they're doing it the other way around. The game we're playing, the progress we've made - are all intact, but they're the backwater game. To play the REAL RuneScape (perhaps it could be called NSRS for short), we have to start over.

I fear Jagex is going to find that you can't make everyone happy, and even though this seems to avoid the mistake made with EoC by doing it the other way around, what they'll find out is that there is an even bigger segnment of the player base that will object to a change like this than the one that would react to another EoC like many did to the last one.

Maybe the negative reaction can be fairly characterized as unjustified or irrational. And RuneScape has to improve with the times or fade away. But there's no good way to bring in major changes to a game people are already playing. And I fear that reality is going to hit Jagex hard when it comes out.

If the new RuneScape is really good, and brings in lots of new players, of course, despite the loss of some of its existing player base, Jagex will do all right. But new games take time to build a following, so a cash flow crunch is a possibility even if it's really good.

You make a great point there - but the post of mine you quoted wasn't directed at a regular rational player of RuneScape, but one of our resident troublemakers. I very much doubt he takes the time to actually read the posts he quotes, and I suspect we'll hear more from him as the thread progresses.

But yes, I fear that for a lot of people "RuneScape 2" is RuneScape. The further we go away from that, the less those people will accept it. And that's all *before* we get into what all the changes are that the new game might bring.

For example, the removal of the tick system sounds great - until the part where it completely changes how the game feels, controls and plays. Yes, the new mechanics would no doubt be a fundamental improvement, but if that change removes an important part of RuneScape's identity, would people still recognize it as RuneScape at all?

And the worst part is, which aspects should be updated and which are sacred varies from player to player. There's no one size fit's all solution if the players aren't prepared to be flexible with their expectations, which means giving whatever game we do get a fair crack at the whip before dismissing it - being resistant to change doesn't help the game stay relevant or gain a potential new audience; unless RuneScape can do those, it's doomed to a slow gradual decline which isn't good for anyone.

After EoC came out, and a lot of players were upset, Jagex brought in OSRS. But to play OSRS, you had to start over from the beginning, so that wasn't a fully satisfactory solution for those who wished EoC hadn't happened.

In that case, you had to give up all your earned levels to get something good - and the something good was a game where progress had value because it was more difficult to obtain.

At least that won't be the problem with Runescape Remastered. The good thing - a new, improved game - that you have to get by giving up all your earned progress is something you can actually get by doing so.

And life with RS3 as the new OSRS may not be so bad either. Maybe updates will be voted on by the players - and so if all skills go to 4000 in RR, they might stay at 99 in RS3.
