what is a facebook companion and how is this a recent update

Official Jagex announcement on Facebook Companion:

New Facebook Companion
We’re happy to announce that our Facebook fans can now enjoy a whole new RuneScape experience: the RS Companion! Whether you want to prepare for the Land Out of Time with some quick info, explore helpful Guides displayed in the Grand Library, never miss future announcements around RS Mobile or RuneFest 2019, grab exclusive Membership offers (even free stuff!) or need Support, the RuneScape Companion has your back!

Talk with the RuneScape Companion

The RuneScape Companion is still young and we want to make it the best experience possible with your help! Don’t hesitate to share your feedback on Facebook and other channels.

It is a new Jagex product out just a couple of days ago, but not a new content.

Sounds like that SAM bot Ubisoft has, tried it once eh... was amusing for about 5 minutes, I could find things out quicker myself. When these things can string together sentences like a human can then maybe they'll pick up but honestly using AI is frustrating because if it doesn't have the answer already scripted it can't answer whatever you're asking it (which happened a lot).

I have a feeling all it's for is RS related questions (just like SAM is for Ubisoft games - anything not related has no scripted response), not full blown support akin to what you'd get from CS. It also only responds with what the developer(s) scripted it with, it doesn't have free access to the internet (from my experience with SAM anyway) to pick and choose from every known video link etc. which is why dealing with an AI is frustrating.

Doubtful if there is much AI involved in the FB Companion. It is probably just a glossary of a few RS terms.

Given RuneScape (amongst everything else) is a potential method of child grooming or prolonged abuse, I feel it's absolutely justified OP wants a way of contacting Jagex particularly on behalf of a minor for information.

Facebook deleting/banning you account? Oh no, the shock/horror. That's not much of a loss. Jagex can mute/ban us as long as they want - I was initially permanently muted years ago cause I was an idiot when I was a kid until one new years Jagex wiped everyones accounts of black marks.

I'm not an expert but I think I read somewhere years ago that all we're technically doing is purchasing the privilege to play games and don't actually own them (same with programs)-so I don't think either do. We don't own our RS accounts either. The parent disables the restrictions, it doesn't deactivate itself automatically - as far as I'm aware.

The real dodgy sites are almost impossible to just stumble upon on the surface web, so much so I can't even think of an example of how you could. Don't meet people from online, problem solved (it's too much hassl

Yes. I pointed out Jagex's Terms and Conditions already. They also have the same righs to delete and ban whoever they are not satisfied with their age restriction. So do all the other commonly accessed sites like Google, Apple, etc.

TBH, Does anybody really think these big companies don't have lawyers, or they don't know what they can or can't do with their own sites and IP?

Their Terms and Conditions cover their own protection against minor or self-proclaimed "minors" inappropriately accessing their products already.

It's relatively new so it should get updates. I support your idea for updating Companion to include links on parental support and related subjects. My child is too young to play right now but may someday decide to join me on Gielinor. I would use that tool to help make us both more aware of our responsibilities while playing online. An online presence seems to be an absolute must for my child's generation so I plan to make them as aware as I can about potential problems while online and the solutions available. Help like that would be appreciated.

On a lighter note, I am glad that I am not the only one who has played with a parent.
My Mom loves the game (my Dad got bored and left)

And congratulations on parenthood!
The point of the journey is not to arrive.

They have email of course. When you use the Support Center, they go to their email address obviously. You can even see it says tipoff@jagex.com, but rest assured, it is no-reply. :)

I don't know if this has already been answered or not so I'll just post.

You're supposed to be 13 to have an email address. As the game requires new accounts to sign up with an email, you're supposed to be 13. This is the same reason you're supposed to be 13 to have a Facebook and other social media.

Jagex will in fact still allow you to make an account and say you're under 13, but you will only be able to use Quick Chat until your 13th birthday. This helps stop children from saying dangerous stuff they might not know is wrong, and why there is an age limit for email, social media, games in the first place.

Because of this -> http://www.coppa.org/coppa.htm

Facebook and other online social media sites and email services are prohibited by federal law from allowing children under 13 create accounts without the consent of their parents or legal guardians.
