Reminds me of that old saying:

"If it ain't broke lets break it!!!"

The thing is, it is kind of "broke" in certain ways, for the reasons already mentioned on the previous page.

It also bears remembering that Jagex has been making moves towards improving the "new player experience" lately (likely with the full release of Mobile in mind), and this is almost certainly part of that. Making Penguins less obtuse is going to make getting into it significantly easier.

And again, I'm still not convinced that this is going to change the way the organized Penguin hunters go about their business much: having exact locations means finding the Penguins is much faster than using clues -- same thing with Scanning due to its limited range -- and Zapping is likely not going to be used much outside of friends playing together (though, the one concern I have is that there might be griefers trying to sabotage the herding efforts).

It all just feels like much ado about nothing to me.

Exactly.

Ppl are just complaining for the sake of complaining like always.

Just because jagex is changing something, doesnt mean it'll make it worse.

Love how ppl always look at the bad in things.

That is certainly the point they should monitor for a while.

But other than that there isn't much, that could be added.

So - what do you guys think now?

It's pretty much exactly how I expected it to be.

I made a point to do my refreshed penguins this week solo, on a low-population world, using only the tools given to me in-game (ie. no spawn locations on the Wiki or forums). The new tools make doing this by yourself significantly easier, as expected; but at the same time, it took significantly longer than it takes me on an average week on World 60 after the organized Penguin teams finished their herding work. The fact that this week's Kharidian Desert penguin's clues are still moderately vague -- at the time I did it, the clue was only that it was in the "Northern Kharidian desert", which is still a large distance to cover -- might have made my experience a bit of an outlier, though.

The new clues are sufficiently vague while still being useful. MacGrubor's Woods were labelled "The East of Kandarin". Draynor Village covers everything from the Wizard's Tower to the outskirts of the Barbarian Village. Elf Camp and Lletya shared the same hint, which seemingly covers all of Tirranwn.

The Scanning range is only 20 paces (30 with the first-tier upgrade, which can be obtained after just 10 penguins), which is fair, I think. The only time the Scanner blipped before I saw the penguin myself was, fittingly enough, the Ghost penguin (who I actually found accidentally while searching for a non-Ghost penguin in Ardy).

It's impossible to unlock Zapping this week, even with resets, so we'll have to wait and see.

007 Penguins were easy, and I got two Easy caskets between my two runs with a reset token.

The XP rewards seem a little high, though. 8 Points gets you a Huge Lamp, which is... a lot.

It seems there won't be too much of a change for the optimal hunting process, but it certainly is more accessible now for a novice player. That probably really just leaves out the zapper now to be hopefully a great addition, rather than a trolling tool.

As for the rewards - I think it's fine - the old linear xp formula was extremely mediocre at high levels (read: not worthwhile to bother for a lot of players), while the current one is worse at lower levels (up to 50-esque without BttF and 70 with - https://i.imgur.com/2DQc0kX.png), it does properly reward high levels. Gold rewards were nerfed to the ground again compared to the stream concept, but I both guess we do not need such a huge gold generator - and Jagex obviously doesn't want players to cash out gold. The 007s probably will for me be the reason to do it on a more regular basis, even though I just had two easy junk caskets yesterday.

My experience/enjoyment of it depends on what others decide to do. Currently people seem to see a point to chat and having them trapped so it's really fun. The main downside so far is the scanner numbers making everyone ask a number like 2? and then having to remember what it means >.> . I've seen people say both that it's too easy and takes the fun out and similar things to what vengeance said.

But it's hard to tell what it'll be like in the long term when there's more information available elsewhere and people learn the hints etc.

The zapper though apparently has a 3min freeze and a 5min cooldown specific to the peng. I was expecting 30seconds-1min max freeze. A 3 min freeze may make it impossible / pointless / boring to even attempt a trap, never mind actually managing to get somewhere. And trapping is the gameplay element.

007's seem fine to me, and 001-6's are probably not worth/designed for active hunting but act as an advert for the d&d and give an extra reward for doing whatever you were doing in game.

But everything together still scares me for the long term. And the zapper seems extremely excessive from a herding pov, but we'll see what happens in the next few weeks.

That certainly are some good points, but certainly not all:

- I don't think it's too much of an issue providing players tools to more easily (and for novice players more graspable) communicate - that the pengs got a number assigned of course is a by-effect of having the hint system being fixed to fit into a modern activity - but is this really a bad thing, just because it changes something, that was done in a certain way for 12 years? Would it bother you in a couple of months, when you got used to it?

As a note: They also have broken down certain gigantic area clusters, which certainly makes it easier now, but entire kingdoms were too big to be honest - it is there to make it also easier for solo hunters, but that certainly doesn't take the appeal of hunting them in a team. I don't know the exact clusters now, but maybe breaking them down into 2-3 general clusters and the cities would've been sufficient.

- Penguins really shouldn't be able to be zapped as long and your numbers sound more than fair. Where I guess the zapper would really shine would be holding the ghost penguin, preventing it to run into some closed off area - enabling players to cooperate in a way they weren't able before.
- Totally agreed on the special agents, I'll be happy when I see one, but I certainly won't pursue them - let alone the 10 you could catch in a single week.

It certainly will show how players will interact with it - especially when the extention features are more widely available than they are right now.
