No support. While it is getting kinda expensive for me to sub to RS with the unnecessary membership price increase, going full F2P is just the route to making RS3's community into an absolute cesspool. We had to deal with that back when EoC and RS3 first came out, I'd rather not go back to that. Look at F2P games like Fortnite, or even F2P MMOs. With the exception of the EverQuest community, pretty much every F2P community out there is filled with toxic individuals and squeakers.

Plus, the entire point of microtransactions in RS3 was meant to be twofold: 1) To avoid future membership price increases (which Jagex went back on, sadly) and 2) To help fund higher-quality content. Remove the core of the game's income (yes, membership is still their primary source of income) and this game will go under.

It might have made sense for them to do this when they introduced MTX, but as it is now I don’t think it’d work too well.

They’ve been building around their current model for a couple of years, and some of the things implemented just wouldn’t work with full f2p access.

Additionally part of the reason for the f2p restrictions, is to limit access to resources that would become farmed by bots / alts.

@Jaekob; I’d recommend trying out Runescapes f2p servers, they’re a lot less toxic than they may have been.

The F2P community isn't that toxic really. I just avoid PvP areas and a lot of D&D Friend chats because they tend to be pretty toxic/childish. But other than that, the game's more toxic people have moved to OSRS for the most part.

Nah it definitely wouldn't work even with MTX. The formula they have going now, Membership is still definitely their biggest source. Only the true fans actually bother to buy costumes or other cosmetics from Solomon's. Granted there are a LOT of people who do it, but of the people who do only a small percentage do it with real money, the rest are bonds-users.
The lucky thing is that the bonds are still paid for and each bond used is one that was bought by another player. So yay for ingame controlled RMT I guess?

Membership games are starting to die out. New players love f2p games because why buy membership when you can play for free? I can literally download fortnite right now at start playing.

If that's the case, how come both rs3 and osrs mobile are doing so well?

@Maxmouse; That’s what I’m saying : ) it would have been worth considering back then, and probably was. But now I don’t think it’ll work well, requiring Jagex to revise their whole strategy, which would be more hassle than its worth and potentially have a negative impact. Support

Oh, no, I wasn't saying the current RS3 community is toxic, I was simply saying that F2P games inevitably end up with very toxic communities because the twelve-year-olds riding on their parents' credit cards will hop in-game and abuse the (inevitably) amped up microtransactions, making the game a lot less enjoyable.

Membership games aren't really dying. As much as I hate to say it WoW, despite it's crappy recent Expansion, is still doing well. FFXIV, is getting ready for their next expansion, and RS3 and OSRS (PC and mobile versions) are still going super strong after so many years. Even AdventureQuest is still strong, the old 2D flash version and the next Gen AQ3D.
Free games, while they're fun in the moment, inevitably die out quick. Look at some past MMOs that no longer exist (other than private servers), like Grand Chase, Dragomon, and Xiah Online. Some Freebies that die sometimes get revived like Luna Online, but they almost always never last long.
The free/membership system RS has now is the reason why it's still alive. It has a free game that has plenty of content to try and mess around with, then allow you to decide if you like it enough to take a shot at members. I remember when I first joined members in 06, and I was thrilled at my first members weapon (Rune Halberd lol). Yea that's a newbie weapon now, but that was my first members weapon and it was a huge spike to my excitement. I imagine a lot of other new members feel the same way about their first experiences with memberships in RS. But that could just be me.

@TinyThi3f
Then yea I agree lol.

@Jaekob Caed
Oh then yea it would end up just like that. A lot of F2P games especially with heavy MTX influence do end up super toxic. Good examples:Aura Kingdom, Luna Online, and Grand Chase. All great games.. Toxic as heck community. I loved playing those games to bits, but if you weren't a high-roller with your MTX, you were pretty much trailer park trash to the rest of the community in those games.
