Possibly controversial and I expect a lot of “no supports”, but I wanted to see people’s opinions on the inclusion of banner advertisements to the RSOF.

Possible pros of adding them;
• Less reliant on heavy mtx, due to extra revenue stream.
• Jagex & Jmods may give more of a focus to the forums.

Possible cons;
• potentially irritating advertisements
• forum performance may suffer, lag a bit.

Thoughts?

Running tally;

1.5
Against
7.5

Seeing as members have the ability to play without adverts. I'd imagine it would extend to the forums as well. In which case all it would do is piss off the free players. I can't imagine it would make the player base happy. Nor would it cool the mtx in game. ~Tranq~

Jagex abandoned banner advertising, partly because of security concerns (infected banners), and partly because it proved impossible to control the content of those adverts, even where the provider allegedly allowed filtering. In the end, Jagex just decided that the hassle didn't justify the minimal income the adverts brought.

@ Tranq; Good point about membership, didn’t even think about that. As for free players I don’t know, personally I’m on the fence. It’d depend on the Ad and how obnoxious they are, I could tolerate some Twitch adverts if it meant less mtx for example.

@ Archaeox; Didn’t realise they had them in the past, but from what you’ve said it seems like they were run through a third party? Jagex have grown as a company and learned some things, maybe they could do them in house?

Going to add a for and against counter to Op, I’m neutral on the idea and think you’re both against, if not let us know.

Good thing you were cautious and added the word "possible" there, because this definitely isn't a pro, or in other words it just wouldn't work as you'd expect: Jagex always wants to
add
to the monetization, not
replace
existing monetization with something else. So if they added these ads, nothing would change with the existing MTX, and we'd just have annoying ads while browsing forums which are already rather dead.

(Don't take this the wrong way btw, your logic is sound in that X revenue could be replaced with Y revenue of equal value, it's just that Jagex doesn't think logically like that.)

So really because of that, at best this idea becomes pointless (I very much doubt Jagex would invest more to the forums if it had ads, social media has a much stronger hold of the players anyway), and at worst it'd be harmful, depending on what the ads would be like.

Why are you yourself interested in seeing advertisements in/on The RSOF?
Is your interest just being a private interest or purely business interest?
What business do you represent?

@2_Tron; If I had to pick one of those two options it would be a private interest, based of some lateral thinking;-

Advertisers would be unlikely to want to market on a low traffic forum - Jagex improves the forums in a bid to lure advertisers.

Although I think Varpushaukka caught onto this and I agree with the points they’ve raised.

I absolutely loathe banner ads, so this gets no support from me.

Also, I can't imagine that the revenue sourced from banner ads on the forums and revenue sourced from MTX are at all comparable enough in scope to make this effective.

No support ever, sorry. Do not like banner advertisements anywhere.
