Sanctum of Rebirth : New Boss Dungeon

Sanctum of Rebirth : New Boss Dungeon

Journey into the depths of the Underworld with RuneScape's first boss dungeon, the Sanctum of Rebirth.

Confront the powerful soul devourers: Vermyx the Brood Mother, Kezalam the Wanderer, and Nakatra, Devourer Eternal in a brand-new back-to-back bossing experience.

Face the boss dungeon alone or with a group of up to four brave adventurers, using any style of combat and choosing between normal mode with a unique death system designed to be approachable for combat enthusiasts, or a more challenging hard mode for combat veterans.

Gotta go where the souls are

Deep within the Underworld lies a mysterious dormant shrine. Governed by Amascut and those loyal to her, the Sanctum of Rebirth once stood as a sacred temple where souls would go to face their final judgement.

Over the ages, the Sanctum of Rebirth was thought to have been long abandoned, with Amascut's influence fading into the annals of time. However, new whispers from the shadows suggest that this temple might still be in play.

Work with Icthlarin to uncover what is happening in the Sanctum and face the new threats that lie waiting for you inside.

Denizens of the Domain

With the Sanctum of Rebirth, we are unveiling a new dungeon type we are calling a 'Boss Dungeon.' In a Boss Dungeon, there are no regular enemies to battle between bosses. Instead, you'll face back-to-back bosses, diving straight into the action.

Vermyx, Brood Mother

A massive devourer wyrm, protecting the entrance to the Sanctum and her clutch of tainted eggs, she is sworn to rid the temple of any unwelcome guests.

Kezalam the Wanderer

A behemoth of a Dark Beast that roamed around Gielinor attacking any who crossed her path, Amascut took interest in her unique strength and sought her out.

Nakatra, Devourer Eternal

A founding member of the Order of Slayer Masters and one of Amascuts most devoted followers who has control over the power within the Sanctum.

Everyone is welcome in the Sanctum

Approachability is one of the major goals for the Sanctum of Rebirth. We have taken several steps to make engaging with the Sanctum very welcoming, such as:

  • Minimal Quest Requirements

Players will be able to access the Sanctum relatively quickly through a short quest that begins near the docks of Um. This quest will have you investigating some shady strangers and working with Icthlarin to gain access to the Sanctum.

We intentionally streamlined the requirements for accessing the quest because we want the challenge and difficulty of the Sanctum to be the obstacles players overcome, rather than a long list of prerequisites.

  • Different Difficulty Settings with Less Punishing Death Mechanics for Lower Difficulty

The Sanctum of Rebirth will offer two different difficulties to choose from:

Normal Mode

An approachable difficulty for newer combat players, ensuring everyone can take part in the Sanctum of Rebirth and with persistence, overcome it.

In Normal Mode, we're trialling changes to the death system to allow you to focus more on defeating the bosses and learning the encounters, and worry less about the penalties of death.

When you are gravely injured in the Sanctum, Icthlarin will briefly protect you from your demise. Mechanically, this means you will not die immediately when you lose all your HP; instead, you become immune to damage for a brief moment and have a portion of your health restored.

When this occurs, you will gain a resurrection sickness debuff for a short time, drastically reducing the damage you deal. This acts as a brief window for you to regain control of the situation and continue progressing in the encounter. This effect will only protect you three times per encounter; on the fourth death, you will be sent out of the encounter and back outside of the Sanctum. This will always be a safe death, and you will not need to buy your items back from Death.

Hard Mode

A classic hard mode for more experienced combat players to showcase their mastery and earn more lucrative rewards. Bosses will have more health, altered mechanics and more dangerous abilities!

This mode will not include the resurrection mechanics that Normal Mode has. For the first week after launch, Death will not charge you for restoring your items. What a swell guy.

  • An increased focus on improved visual telegraphing for boss actions and encounter mechanics

In the Sanctum, you will be kept on your toes as you duck, dodge, and blade dive through devastating attacks from each boss. To help players navigate these treacherous attacks, we have developed new visual indicators that will hopefully help you quickly notice what attack is incoming and how to avoid it! Check out some of the screenshots below to get an idea of it. We have also added more elements to the UI to help players predict what's coming next. Keep an eye on the boss's adrenaline bar so you aren't caught unaware!

Spoils and Treasures

Delving into the Sanctum will reward you with brand-new, powerful items. Each boss will spawn a chest upon their defeat, So you can grab your rewards immediately or wait until after defeating the final boss to claim them all at once!
