A New Era For RuneScape Begins January 19 2026

A New Era For RuneScape Begins January 19 2026

You have spoken!

With a staggering 124,985 votes in our recent vote, Treasure Hunter will leave RuneScape for good on January 19th 2026.

On this day, we will also be removing 225 Direct XP and Skilling related items from sale. There will be no more purchasable sources of Direct XP or items that disrupt the core gameplay and the player economy.

In addition, we’ll be investing heavily in a year-long Integrity Roadmap that targets the very heart of longstanding issues within the game – from UI, to visuals, to balance, and much more.

We are so delighted you believe in this future as much as we do. Here’s what it all means.

A New Era Begins on January 19

January 19 will mark the beginning of an incredible year for RuneScape. This is a turning point that will fundamentally transform the future of the game forever.

Next year, we will welcome in a new dawn where integrity is at the heart of every design decision we make, where the barriers that hold the game back begin to fall, and this game sustains itself with a firm focus on a growing community.

Significantly cutting MTX is just one part of this bigger tale to see RuneScape thriving again.

In 2026, we will deliver a Content Roadmap that we believe is one of the best in our history. We’ll fix core issues with the game through our Integrity Roadmap updates throughout the year. And we’ll continue to evolve how we include your voice in the development of our content.

The Integrity Roadmap

Our Integrity Roadmap’s sole focus is to tackle some of the biggest friction points in RuneScape head-on, including areas of the game that matter most to you.

Throughout 2026, we'll be releasing frequent dedicated updates that address things like; visual identity across the game world and the player avatar, UI, combat, dailyscape, early and mid-game experiences, and a whole lot more.

We’ll give you a comprehensive look at our plans next January, but for now, here’s a look at just some of the key areas we’ll be focusing on.

User Interface

Ask any ‘Scaper what they think our top problem is, and other than MTX, they’d probably say UI!

Our goal is to create a cleaner, more intuitive interface that makes the game easier to read and navigate without losing the flexibility that long-time players need.

That means improving overall visibility, polishing key menus and icons, and making the default layout a clearer and more appealing option that can be used throughout your entire journey.

We’re also aiming to reduce friction in Edit Mode, making it an opt-in Advanced Experience for those who want it – and have it be faster and easier to customise your setup without breaking your flow.

While this will be an area we have to work on over time, we believe these updates will have a notable impact on this age old problem for RuneScape.

Skilling Balance

From our Experiments, we know much of the motivation for using Treasure Hunter & MTX items has been due to some issues left unaddressed in certain skills.

This includes the pacing of some skills, the lack of alternative AFK methods for others, and even some that just aren't as enjoyable to train.

We'll be making targeted improvements to these areas and more, ensuring RuneScape remains a game you can fit into your life however you choose to play - and offers a great experience through every level.

Dailyscape

Over time, daily systems have started to feel more like a checklist than a choice. That’s not the RuneScape experience we want for anyone.

We're stepping back on systems that add pressure to daily engagement and that feeling of a series of chores you need to complete when you log in.

This is about designing systems that encourage natural play, not pressure. We want every login to feel meaningful, impactful and respectful of your time, whether you’ve got ten minutes or a few hours.

This is work we’ll need to tackle over an extended period and with delicate consideration to the needs of our players. But it’s an area we’re committed to improving and refining this year.

Combat

Over 2026, we're also turning our attention to the combat status quo, with an aim to make every combat style feel more consistent, modern and engaging.

We learned a lot from Necromancy - both the things that worked and those that didn't.

We will take many of those positive learnings and roll them out to Melee, Ranged, and Magic to bring all four styles into better alignment. That means refining ability flow, improving readability, and ensuring each combat style has its own clear identity and purpose.

We’re also reviewing long-standing mechanics like Adrenaline and Threshold Abilities, and how combat scales through the levelling journey. We want to make the system easier to learn for new and returning players, but still rewarding to master.

While these are the right changes for the game, it's important we approach them properly. We’ll be spooling up Beta Worlds to involve the combat community in our direction as much as possible and ensure we land in the right place.

Visual Identity: The World

Over the last 25 years, Gielinor has evolved through many different art directions and technical eras which has created a jarring visual experience.

We’ve been working on a unified visual identity for Gielinor over the past few years, with Rellekka and Kandarin as recent examples of faithful visual references with a renewed, but familiar, art style.

We’ll be continuing this work next year through environmental refreshes to key locations like Lumbridge, Burthorpe, and Varrock.

Our goal is to leave RuneScape with a unified visual identity; from lighting and atmosphere, to environmental composition, texture fidelity, material definition, prop design, and regional colour grading - all elements that shape the tone and mood of a location.

Visual Identity: Your Character

We are so happy to confirm Player Avatar Refresh is officially back on the Roadmap and releasing next year!

Our goal with the Player Avatar Refresh is simple – bring over the higher fidelity modernised models that match the visual standard of our environment refreshes, but making a few adjustments to the previously shown upgrades to make them a little more ‘Scapey.

Cosmetic design integrity is another key focus in the roadmap. We want armour, skilling gear, and outfits to feel more grounded within the world of Gielinor – and tackle some of the overt legacy cosmetics that just don’t fit that vision.

And for players who prefer a more grounded experience, in January we’ll also be adding cosmetic toggle options, giving you control over the visibility of out-of-place cosmetic items.

By the end of this work, we want you to feel more connected to both your world and your character, with art direction and visual design that respect RuneScape’s world while still supporting your freedom of personal style and expression.

Visual Identity: Tackling Clutter

With 25 years of content development, Gielinor is a little messy! We want to declutter the world and take a careful look at how Gielinor is built, organised, and experienced as you move through it.

As part of this roadmap, we’re taking time to restore Gielinor’s sense of place, refining layouts, reducing visual noise and ensuring every space feels intentional and alive.

That means decluttering environments across the surface world to improve clarity and cohesion. For example, this means tidying up misplaced areas like The Beach in Lumbridge or the Challenge Mistress camping out in Burthorpe.

While these ideas were creative and memorable in their time, they don’t always fit the flow of a living, connected world. We want RuneScape to once again feel like a vibrant, believable world you can explore.

RuneScape Ahead

We’ll be kicking off our new era in style with a special RuneScape Ahead on January 19.

As we pull the game offline to deploy our MTX changes and remove Treasure Hunter, we’ll premiere a video on YouTube outlining a year of killer content and our full Integrity Roadmap plans.

Shortly after, the game will come back online and you’ll re-enter a RuneScape that has changed forever.

Our Plans for Items Removed From Sale

Some of the items that will no longer be sold also don't fit within our vision for RuneScape's gameplay in a post MTX world, or won't be necessary based on other Integrity Roadmap fixes. You can find a full list of those items below.

These items will be usable after the removal from sale, but we encourage you to use them over 2026. While we communicated an intent to remove these items in the list in January 2027, this may actually take the form of a conversion, rebalance or change in functionality. Wherever we land, you'll want to use them up as they will be far less potent than their existing value today if they remain at all.

Change Begins Next Week

We’re hard at work moving all the pieces into place to make this new direction a success. While the journey begins in earnest on January 19th, we're making a symbolic (but important!) change next week.

On Monday November 17th, we’ll be starting all new players back in Lumbridge. We'll also be releasing an update to declutter and restore Lumbridge to a more familiar style, including:

  • The return of the iconic Lumbridge castle walls
  • The removal of the Lumbridge Crater and restoration of the area's original identity
  • The relocation of Shattered Worlds temple, and the restoration of Lumbridge Swamp caves and Water Runecrating Altar to their original locations
  • The removal of the Nexus
  • An updated Lumbridge Sage who offers a lot more guidance and help for new players

It’s a small step, but another example of how we want to restore the identity and heart of what makes RuneScape... well, RuneScape!

A Future of a Growing Community

The fundamental driving force of this decision is to enable RuneScape to thrive over its next 25 years.

Our changes will play a big part in how successful this proves to be. But it’s also time to be humble and know this isn’t something we can achieve alone. Players have left us over missteps in our past, and we have trust to rebuild.

There is nothing more powerful than the belief and support of this community. Like the environment you created for our Experiments, and your overwhelming response to the vote, we need your help to give this game the growing community it deserves.

When we get things right, or when the game feels it deserves your praise, we’d love it if you could fly the flag for RuneScape. We expect to earn that through what we do, not just through asking. But everything you can do to shout about this game when we are getting things right will play a huge part in making this work.

Together, let’s introduce a whole host of new and long-lost friends to a game we can all be proud of.

Mark Those Calendars

We’re just 68 days away from these words becoming reality. Honestly, we’re still pinching ourselves writing this!

We’ll see you on January 19 as we say goodbye to integrity-tainting MTX and get hyped up for an era-defining year with RuneScape Ahead. See you in Gielinor.

FAQs

When will I need to use up any Treasure Hunter Keys?

Treasure Hunter will be removed on January 19th 2026. All Treasure Hunter Keys will need to be used before that date.

Keys from additional in-game sources (e.g. Daily Challenges or Quests) will cease to be available from January 12th.

When can I no longer purchase Treasure Hunter Keys?

Keys will no longer be available to purchase from January 12th 2026, one week prior to the switch off. Any purchased keys will need to be spent before January 19th 2026.

How will this impact my Premier Membership bonus Daily Keys entitlement?

The Premier Membership perk of additional Daily Keys will no longer be offered as part of Premier from January 12th 2026 - the same day Keys can no longer be purchased.

If you have an active Premier Membership purchased before November 12th 2025, which also runs beyond January 12th 2026, we will award your Premier Bonus Keys for every date remaining of your current year of Premier Membership on January 12th.

If you purchase or renew Premier Membership on or after November 12th 2025, you only will receive Bonus Daily Keys as usual until January 12th. You will not receive an additional grant of keys for your remaining Premier Membership tenure.

Any Keys must be used before January 19th 2026, after which Treasure Hunter is no longer available.

Why are you not changing things immediately?

The main reason is development time. Removing these items is a significant amount of work, and one we need to get right. Now your decision is confirmed, we can get started on preparing for this huge change in January.

Will there still be Treasure Hunter promotions until January 19th?

Yes. While we prepare for this huge change in January and where our pursuit of a growing community can start in earnest, the game will continue to operate as it does today - including usual MTX offerings and promotions. While we're moving away from a model that relies on these systems, it's a change we're now preparing for rather than one we're able to make today.

We did explore the potential of hiding Treasure Hunter as a toggle in our Options settings for this period. However, it would add additional development work that would put our January 19 timeline (or content development) behind schedule. As with lots of RuneScape content development, it's less simple than it sounds! Ultimately, we decided it's best to keep our focus on January 19 as a turning point for change, rather than delaying our timelines by servicing the interim period with additional temporary features.

I no longer play but this makes me want to play again! Should I return?

The changes we’ve announced come into effect beginning January 19 2026.

While we have plenty of great content to come (and recently released!), it’s worth remembering things will feel pretty as-usual until then. We'd love for you to come back now, but if you want to experience these changes, just remember they won't come into effect until January 19th.

I didn't want this change. Why should I stay?

From the outset, we knew any changes to Treasure Hunter and our MTX offerings would leave some players upset. Significant changes can never please everyone, even when they are what's best for the game and it's future potential to grow.

Our Experiments taught us a lot about motivations for using these items and why they are so important to some players. In our Integrity Roadmap, we will be directly addressing your concerns in healthier ways for the game within this new vision - such as our Skilling Rebalance announced above. We'll also be working closely with the community throughout our Integrity Roadmap process to hear from players like you and make sure the game hasn't moved away from you too much.

You mentioned some items removed from sale will no longer be available in the game at all. Which items will be fully removed?

We’ve been moving as fast as we can to enable change as early as possible and deliver on our promises. A side effect of this is heavy prioritisation of our design focus. Given items won’t be removed for an extended grace period after removal from sale (more on this in the FAQ below), we haven’t finalised our full plans in this area.

To provide the clarity you need, we shared a provisional list of items we will remove from gameplay after the extended grace period - and following removal from sale - in this blog.

This list is not final but reflects current internal plans for which items will be impacted by a full removal. Our Removal from Sale list is unchanged and will still take place on the date announced when the vote closes.

This list is broken into two areas:

  • Provisional Removal List: Items we currently intend to remove, fundamentally change or significantly nerf at the end of the grace period
  • May Be Removed List: These are items we feel may not align with the integrity of the game or ideally shouldn't exist due to unnecessary complexities they introduce. These items may be added to the removal from gameplay list pending the outcomes of Integrity Roadmap work and what we learn from players through that process.
    • For example, should we significantly reduce or modify D&Ds as part of the Dailyscape Integrity Roadmap work, it may be best to remove D&D Tokens.

If the item isn’t on those lists, we have no plans to remove or change within the game at any time.

Why are you removing items fully from the game?

Any items signalled in our “Fully Removed” list included above will continue to be available to use until January 2027. This date is a significant amount of time after the removal of Treasure Hunter and associated items from sale.

The MTX Reductions & Integrity Roadmap are about moving RuneScape into a much healthier place that puts the core gameplay back in the spotlight.

While we’ll be removing 225 items from sale, some items conflict with this design ethos enough that continued availability could be harmful.

Following a year-long Integrity Roadmap that will address many of the motivations for using these items, we’ll be making sure the game is fully cleaned up of these conflicting items to make sure we’re offering a consistent, fun experience for all. How we do this may vary, but the items will be far less potent than they are today if they remain usable in any form. We highly recommend you use them in 2026.

Will you be adding any MTX to replace what you are removing?

We have no plans to do that beyond what we've announced: Bonus XP Bundles in the Marketplace, and Cosmetics purchasable in the Marketplace. We will increase the regularity of new Cosmetics releases, but with a firmer focus on visual integrity and fit within the world of Gielinor.

Our intention is to reduce the prevalence and focus on MTX so we can put our all into growing the volume of RuneScape Members to sustain the game.

What's replacing the rewards I usually get from Treasure Hunter, including things like Daily Challenge Keys?

Right now, we have no plans to directly replace these rewards. Our Integrity Roadmap will be how we replace these items by fixing the root issues that make them so valued - like Skilling Balance and addressing Skills that are simply not as fun or accessible as others.

Our Integrity Roadmap will be driven by player feedback and involvement. As an example, as we touch on issues like Dailyscape within our Integrity Roadmap, you'll be a voice in helping us shape its future role (or not!) within the game - and through that, what we should or should not offer.

Will Skilling XP or training methods be adjusted as a result of Treasure Hunter's removal?

Yes. The Experiments clearly showed the motivation for many MTX items is primarily driven by issues like skilling balance or poor options for training certain skills.

Fixing these issues isn't just about our new and returning players. It's also about serving our players who more highly value Treasure Hunter and the items we'll be removing. Over our Integrity Roadmap, we'll be making improvements directly targeted at making the core game feel better for you, while maintaining a healthy integrity-led balance in our approach to solutions.

Why are things like Slayer VIP Tokens & Aura Refreshes potentially on the list of items you may no longer offer through gameplay?

Our Integrity Roadmap will involve a lot of player feedback and involvement.

In certain instances, there may be outcomes that make these items no longer necessary. For example, if Auras no longer had a cooldown as a result of the Dailyscape aspects of the Roadmap, we wouldn't need Aura Refreshes right? As much as possible, we'll be working with players to find healthier, simpler solutions to the friction points these items currently provide the value for - and only plan to remove them if we've delivered the right changes in game first.

Why are some items like Portables & Dwarven Tools on the Removed From Gameplay list when there's been requests for them to be added to Invention?

We have seen requests for us to keep certain items and offer them in new ways.

We do not believe these items fit the future vision for RuneScape in their current form. However, we will be openly exploring the role these items played in the game during our Integrity Roadmap work next year. We'll remain open to potentially introducing new gameplay focused items in a similar ethos, but with design changes that help them fit more in this new integrity-driven future for RuneScape.

We will also reduce the need for these items through other Integrity changes, such as our Skilling Rebalance work, to make them less essential than they are today.

Are systems like Daily Challenges being reworked?

Other than the removal of Treasure Hunter keys, Daily Challenges with XP benefits will continue to be available when these changes take place.

We will be looking at Daily Challenges as part of our Dailyscape Integrity Roadmap work, and as we mentioned above, you will play a part in shaping our future direction for their role in the game - if any.

Lucky items have unique appearances and have only been available from Treasure Hunter. Will we see these items make their way into regular gameplay?

Lucky Items will be removed from gameplay at the end of the grace period. We have now committed to releasing cosmetic variants when this happens - we'll have more information next year.

Brooch of the Gods has benefits that apply to some of the affected items. Are you going to address that?

Yes, we will be updating Brooch of the Gods at some point in future to return some of the lost benefits in new ways.

What happens to my TH currencies?

Oddments will be removed, as will any Treasure Hunter currencies you hold.

We will be looking at providing access to Treasure Hunter promotions with seasonal currency prior to its removal so you can use up anything you have left.

What's happening to RuneCoins?

RuneCoins will still be used, primarily for purchasing Cosmetics through the Marketplace. We are actively exploring solutions for direct real-money purchases via Marketplace in future.

Will you continue to have the Offerwall in any way - say for RuneCoins?

The Offerwall has been our way to provide additional routes to acquiring Keys for players. Despite the intent behind its existence, it’s not a part of the vision we have for how RuneScape represents itself going forward.

The Offerwall will also be removed on January 12th 2026.

What’s the future of Double XP?

We intend to keep Double XP as part of the RuneScape experience.

As promised back in September, we will be openly exploring a reduction in overall Double XP availability with the community next year. As a result, we will not be running our usual Winter Double XP event in February 2026.

This is a test to begin exploring feedback about reduced Double XP within RuneScape. We'll be carefully monitoring how this impacts the game, and your feedback, to decide our future approach. We will still host our usual Autumn Double XP this November, and our Spring Double XP next May.

Given we’re already introducing significant change in the coming months, we want you to know we will be approaching this cautiously. Even if this direction is popular, we may shift to a final consistent approach slowly to ensure our Integrity Roadmap fixes have put the game into the right place.

Are you doing this because of laws being worked on in the UK/EU?

No. There are no impending requirements that are forcing this change from either UK or EU legislation.

We are aware of the EU's work in this space, but everything is exploratory and undefined at this stage. These processes historically take many years to come into law, so even if they were to be defined in a way that would influence existing offerings, it is highly unlikely to be anytime soon.

These changes have only one motivation; the growth of the RuneScape community. We believe moving away from MTX reliance, fixing fundamental issues and listening to the feedback from our community on MTX leads to another 25 stronger years ahead for the game – despite the challenges that come with this change.
