The Week Ahead:
DailyScape Overhaul Launch
- This update is going live today. Read all about it here!
World Declutter
- The World Declutter project is a game wide initiative to focus on grounding the world and pulling back on over the top effects, with a likely focus on combat related visuals.
- Mod Yuey will be joined by other JMods to chat about this on a Stream on the RuneScape Twitch Channel this Thursday, March 19th. The Stream will start at 16:00 gametime and will run for about an hour. We will then flow into our regular community stream at 17:00 gametime.
Player-Owned Housing & Construction 120 Design
- Player-Owned Housing & Construction 120 Design will be a first look at this exciting project, slated to release later this year. In this first Community Topic on the subject we're planning to focus on what we want to achieve and may include a sneak peak at some of the technical improvements that will support this update.
- This blog is scheduled to release on Friday, March 20th.
DailyScape Overhaul
Clearing your daily schedule
It's a big week for RuneScape... today marks the removal of large portions of DailyScape! Our goal with this momentous shift is to ultimately let you log in and play on your own terms, when you want and how you want. As a reminder, here's what DailyScape relates to and why it can be a problematic aspect of RuneScape:
DailyScape is a term that describes game content, outside of a skills core identity, that is often perceived as mandatory to engage with due to time-gated mechanics and the disproportionately high reward offering for little time investment.
With this update, we aim to move away from much of the DailyScape design by addressing the problems it can create for players. These issues have built up over time and often impact how enjoyable and flexible the game feels to play.
Dive into our blog here for more information on all the changes.
Combat Style Modernisation Update
This Week's Note Worthy Changes
Death's Swiftness (now with extra swiftness)
We've changed up Death's Swiftness. Previously we felt like the ability didn't really highlight the mobile nature of ranged when limiting the player to a spot. So... we changed that.
- Death Swiftness is now entirely mobile and features new visual effects too.
- Of note: We have also removed the small damage over time effect that death swiftness had; we felt that impact on players damage was minimal, and the effect rarely worked how players would have liked; only working on your initial primary target and not working if other players nearby had a death swiftness, sunshine or 'blackhole' special attack active. Additionally we didn't like the idea that with the new moveable swiftness that players would feel like they have to stand in melee distance in order to min-max this little extra damage. But with that in mind, let us know what you think!

Surge, Escape and Friends
Surge and Escape no longer share cooldowns, except in PvP scenarios.
- This was a commonly requested change, so we've unlinked the cooldowns of Surge and Escape. There does still however remain a very short anti-spam cooldown to prevent both abilities firing on the same cycle.
Surge, Escape, Runic Charge and Sigils no longer clear stalled abilities.
- You're fighting a boss, dodging fireballs and 'stall' your ultimate ability whilst your hero runs into attack range, you press Surge to get there a bit quicker and lo and behold your ultimate has gone the way of Guthix.
- But no longer! The above just demonstrates one of the many situations where players could get negatively affected by Surge and other utility abilities clearing their 'active ability', so we're making a change; allowing Surge an co. to not clear stalled abilities.
What happens next
The Combat Style Modernisation project has been a real labour of love for the team over the past few months. While this chapter of the work is coming to a close, it’s by no means the end of our efforts to improve combat, we’ll continue looking for ways to refine and evolve the system moving forward, be that in some quick patch notes or in whole combat updates but right now other projects are calling.
With that in mind there is a number of things the team is still working on that we want to highlight.
Note: Whilst there are hundreds more improvements for combat that the team wants to work on and likely will implement, we wanted to showcase some standout ones that we're committed to releasing.
- Core Magic Buff
- Following on from last weeks top end nerf for magic, we want to add a little bit of power back into the style at the core so it affects all mages, not just those with the best gear.
- Seperating Dive and Bladed Dive
- Retaining the shared cooldown, but otherwise splitting the abilities so they don't overwrite each other
- Lower Tier Equilibrium Access
- Adding access to Equilibrium rank 1 to a more common component.
- Further Animation / VFX improvements
- Improving timing of 'Chain' on secondary targets.
- Changes to Concentrated Blast animation
- Following feedback that the current animation is too 'jerky / quick' we're looking to rework the anim to make it clearer what the character is doing, and reduce the amount of wild movements.
- Further Modernisation of outdated VFX
- E.g. Assault, Pulverise etc.
It's worth reiterating that this list is by no means exhaustive, and there are further improvements the team wants to make such as new head bars for different styles, improvements to items etc, the list above is just some of the standout work we think you would be interested in and that the team is currently working on or has finished.
Further beyond, the team would like to know what further improvements you'd like to see made to combat. No matter how big or small we want to hear from you.
