From the beginning, skills have been the cornerstone of RuneScape, shaping every player's progression and journey. They define the adventures you pursue, the challenges you conquer, and how you interact with the world of Gielinor.
Achieving level 99 in a skill was once a prestigious milestone, coveted by many. Over time, however, the introduction of new content, bonuses, and streamlined training methods has made this feat more attainable.
While not everyone has reached skill mastery, a growing number of players are rising to this challenge. To keep the experience fresh and exciting, we’re dedicated to introducing new challenges and enhancing the skilling journey. Up next on the 110 chopping block: Woodcutting, Fletching… and Firemaking? Coming Monday December 9th.

Tree Trunks and Bow Strings
Woodcutting and Fletching have always been natural companion skills: you chop logs and fletch them into useful tools or powerful weapons. Today, we’re excited to reveal what’s coming with 110 Woodcutting and Fletching. Expect a magical new tree, innovative skilling mechanics, high-level and Masterwork weapons, powerful tools to unlock, and a host of quality-of-life improvements for both skills!
We've approached 110 Woodcutting and Fletching as a targeted refinement of the skills upper levels, focusing exclusively on levels 100-110.
Throughout development, we’ve worked closely with the community via social channels to gather suggestions, discuss design features, and shape the update. Drawing from lessons learned with Mining & Smithing, we’ve blended your ideas with a focus on your wants and needs.
The primary focus of the update is the new tree, which sprouted into existence thanks to Heedi, an ilujankan traveler who brought precious seeds from Iaia’s big trees to Gielinor. While experimenting with them, she developed a cross breed of Iaia's and Gielinor's Magic trees - known as Eternal Magic trees. These powerful trees magically alter the landscape in their vicinity, encouraging floral growth.
110 Woodcutting – A Cut Above the Rest | New Trees, New Mechanics, New Hatchets
At level 100 Woodcutting, you’ll unlock the ability to chop Eternal Magic trees, located in a lush, magical clearing north of Eagle’s Peak. Logs from these trees can be used with level 100 Fletching to craft items or level 100 Firemaking to burn them—but we’ll delve into those skills shortly.
For these new trees, we’ve reimagined Woodcutting’s mechanics to address common pain points in the skill. Eternal Magic trees are non-competitive, and their skilling flow introduces a more dynamic set of mechanics, including two that redefine core training. Let’s dive in!
Tree-mendous Timers
First up are tree timers, which function like a tree’s health bar. In the current system, trees fall at random intervals, creating an inconsistent experience when training Woodcutting. Eternal Magic trees, however, operate differently—they have a fixed duration before falling. Once their timer runs out, the tree turns into a stump and begins a respawn countdown before reappearing.
If all players stop cutting a tree before it falls, its "health" will begin to regenerate after a short delay. This system ensures a more predictable and engaging skilling flow, reducing frustration and adding a strategic layer to tree-cutting.
Each Eternal Magic tree has its own timer, which starts counting down the moment someone begins chopping it. Eternal Magic trees have a long uptime, providing a more consistent skilling experience.
We’ve also factored in boosts that prevent trees from falling, such as the Resourceful aura, Refined perk, and Cadantine incense sticks. When these effects activate as a tree is about to fall, they add an additional 30 seconds to the timer. However, there’s a limit of 5 times these boosts can trigger before the tree is forced to fall.
Log-ical Instincts
Just as Mining has Rockertunities and Archaeology features the Time Sprite, Eternal Magic trees introduce a brand-new call-to-action mechanic: Lumberjack’s Intuition!
Every so often while chopping, you'll see a flurry of leaves appear on another side of the tree.
Move to this side of the tree and start chopping again to activate the Lumberjack’s Intuition buff, which lasts for 30 seconds. While active, the buff grants several bonuses, including:
- Increased XP when a log is obtained
- A higher chance to obtain Bird’s Nests
- A higher chance to obtain Enchanted Bird’s Nests (more on these later!)
- A higher chance to perform a Perfect Cut (more on this later too!)
The first swing of your hatchet with Lumberjack's Intuition's is a guaranteed perfect cut. And if you have moved to the affected side of the tree within a few seconds, you’ll also earn a guaranteed bird’s nest drop—with a chance for it to become an Enchanted bird’s nest.
Sharp Instincts, Perfect Cuts
Perfect Cuts are a kind of critical strike mechanic, which guarantees a log from that swing - and grants extra XP for that log. Perfect Cuts have a random base chance to occur, but this chance increases with levelling benefits and Woodcutting consumables. Which brings us to...
Cutting Edge Consumables
If you’ve used items like Archaeology’s Hi-spec Monocles or Archaeologist’s Tea, you’ll find these new Woodcutting consumables familiar. They provide various boosts for 20 minutes each, with effects that can be stacked for up to an hour. These consumables offer the following benefits:
- Bird Whistle
- Increases the chance of finding a specific type of bird's nest.
- Choose between seed, ring, or egg bird’s nests.
- Sharpening Stone
- Increases the chance of performing a Perfect Cut.
- Imbued Bird Feed
- Increases the chance of finding an Enchanted bird's nest.
- Lumberjack’s Courage
- Increases the XP received from gaining a log by 20%.
Unlike Archaeology’s consumables these items are tradeable adding a small money-making opportunity for those chopping Eternal Magic trees. However, these can only found within Enchanted Bird’s nests!
Best in the Nest
Enchanted bird’s nests are bird's nests that have been affected by the mystical power of the Eternal Magic tree, containing better and more unique loot. We’re all aware birds are good at foraging for shiny things so within these nests you can expect to find:
- Rarer seeds
- Higher tiers of Wood Spirits
- Woodcutting Consumables
- Clue Scrolls
- Salvage
- Gems
- Necklaces
We want these bird’s nests to give you something to look forward to receiving while passively Woodcutting and provide things that can be useful either for Woodcutting or simply feel rewarding. For example, Necklaces are useful for those wanting to create signs of the porter.
Eagle Eyed (heh) adventurers will also spot that all of the salvage consists of types of Orikalkum salvage which were not available prior to this update. Oh, and on the topic of bird’s nests, we’ve now made them stick around on the ground longer before disappearing.
Axe-pecting More?
Naturally, a powerful tree calls for a powerful hatchet. With level 100 Smithing, you can craft the Primal Hatchet using Primal bars—a level 100 tool ideal for cutting all types of trees.
There’s plenty more to share about hatchets, but we’ll dive into that later.
And of course we’ve added leveling benefits to enhance your experience when chopping Eternal Magic trees. These include increased effects from Lumberjack’s Intuition, improved hatchet proficiency that boosts the performance of hatchets within a tier, a higher chance of performing a Perfect Cut, and more. With this update you’ll also find Eternal Magic wood spirits dropping from various monsters, bosses and Enchanted bird’s nests, perfect for increasing log yield while woodcutting! Some of these sources include Edimmu’s, Liverworts, Ripper Dinosaurs, Solak, Nex: AoD, and more.
At level 110 Woodcutting, you’ll unlock the ability to harvest perfect Eternal Magic branches—an essential material for crafting the Masterwork Bow. We’ll delve into the details of this powerful weapon later in the blog.
Building on our refreshed skilling mechanics, we turn to the next major focus of this update: Fletching. This skill has received a mechanical revamp, tailored for crafting Eternal Magic weapons and ammunition.
110 Fletching – Aim High | Masterwork Bow, Eternal Magic Weapons , New Mechanics
At level 100 Fletching, you can craft Eternal Magic shortbows and Primal arrows using Eternal Magic logs. At level 103, you’ll gain the ability to create Primal Crossbows and Primal bolts. Using a tier-upgrade system similar to Smithing, both weapon types start at level 85 and can be upgraded to level 90. Meanwhile, Primal arrows and bolts are level 100, giving you access to powerful core ammunition. To wield and use these weapons, you’ll need 99 Ranged.
As with the weapons, Primal bars also have expanded use in Fletching. At level 100 Smithing, you’ll need to smelt Primal bars into crossbow limbs, arrowheads, and bolt tips.
Additionally, Fletching introduces refreshed skilling mechanics for crafting Eternal Magic items. These changes aim to make training more varied and engaging, with quality-of-life improvements to avoid the grind of crafting the same items repeatedly. As a result, XP is now weighted more toward weapon creation than ammunition.
Benchmarks of Power – Upgrade Your Weapons with Fletching Workbenches
Eternal Magic weapons follow an upgrade system similar to Smithing, but with a few tweaks to fit the Fletching theme. You’ll apply your Fletching expertise to upgrade and submit weapons to supply the local armies of Gielinor. The upgrading process is mostly done at new Fletching workbenches which can be found in numerous spots around the game world.
These workbenches can be used to craft ranged weapons and ammunition, as well as upgrade and submit Eternal Magic weapons. You’ll find them in Burthorpe, Varrock’s Ranged shop, the Ranging Guild, Catherby’s Ranged shop, the City of Um, and the Cadarn district of Prifddinas and the Fort’s Fletching workbench if you have access to it.
Base Eternal Magic weapons can be crafted as usual, but upgrading them requires a Fletching workbench. Each upgrade only requires additional logs, allowing you to fletch and gain more XP without needing to stock up on bowstrings or crossbow limbs.
For example, you can craft a base Primal Crossbow using an Eternal Magic stock, Primal limbs, and a crossbow string. This can then be upgraded to a Primal Crossbow Mk. 1 with 2 additional logs, and further upgraded to a Mk. 2 with 4 more logs. The process continues until it reaches Mk. 5, at which point it can be converted into a Primal Crossbow (Martial), sacrificing the weapon for a significant XP reward. This final step requires no additional logs.
See the table below for an expanded look on required ingredients.
Weapon Upgrade | Required Ingredients |
---|---|
Base Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow | Base resources (unstrung shortbow, bowstring, Primal limbs, eternal stock, crossbow string) |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow Mk. 1 | 2 Eternal Magic Logs |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow Mk. 2 | 4 Eternal Magic Logs |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow Mk. 3 | 8 Eternal Magic Logs |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow Mk. 4 | 16 Eternal Magic Logs |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow Mk. 5 | 32 Eternal Magic Logs |
Eternal Shortbow | Primal Crossbow (Martial) | None. Sacrifice weapon upon completion. |
First, only the base (T85) and Mk. 5 (T90) variants of weapons can be equipped and traded. Mk. 1 to Mk. 4 items cannot be equipped or traded; they can only be upgraded or disassembled. This means that once you begin upgrading, the weapon cannot be used in combat until it reaches Mk. 5. Once a weapon is upgraded to Mk. 5, it can be converted into a Martial weapon and submitted for a significant XP reward.
Another difference is that these items only need to be started at a Fletching workbench. Unlike Smithing, which requires you to work on an item at an anvil, once you begin working on a fletching item, you can continue upgrading it at any workbench or anywhere in the game world! This flexibility aligns with Fletching's identity, where you can craft weapons and ammunition wherever you choose.
However, Martial weaponry can only be worked on at a Fletching workbench, as it must be deposited into the supply depot at the workbench. Logs required for creating and upgrading weapons can be drawn directly from the log box, which can now be filled with noted logs for convenience.
Lock & Load
We’ve also applied our refreshed approach to mechanics in ammunition creation!
Normally, 50 bolts are made from one metal bar, but with Primal bolt tips, we've increased this to 75 to match the amount made with arrowheads. Additionally, the creation of Primal bolts has been streamlined, with 15 bolts being crafted in a single action instead of the previous 10, aligning with the production of arrows. Finally, we’ve increased the make-x limit for both bolts and arrows to 20, rather than having separate limits of 15 for bolts and 20 for arrows.
The ammunition crafting process has also been standardized. Both arrows and bolts will now require an Eternal Magic shaft, instead of only arrows requiring a shaft and bolts requiring feathers. The process works as follows:
- Fletch an Eternal Magic log → Eternal Magic Shaft
- Combine with Feathers → Headless Eternal Magic Shaft
- Combine with either Primal Arrowheads or Bolt Tips → Primal Arrow or Primal Bolt
Primal arrows and bolts are level 100 ammunition with no special effects. Existing Elder God arrows will be automatically changed from level 95 to level 100 to be compatible with the Masterwork Bow. No need to wait on crafting them.
What Else? Just the Tip of the Arrow
Levelling benefits will also play a significant role within levels 100–110 Fletching. This time, we’ve taken a closer look at Smithing’s levelling benefits and opted for a fresh design approach. While Smithing’s bonuses provide useful perks as you level up, they don’t necessarily alter how you progress through each tier.
With Eternal Magic Fletching, we wanted to make the journey from 100–110 feel more dynamic. At various levels, you’ll discover it’s more advantageous to craft specific weapons, as they yield higher XP. At certain points, you may also face decisions about which items best balance your time and resources, adding an element of strategy to your progression.
Can’t forget those wood boxes! 100 Fletching will allow you to upgrade your Elder wood box into a new Eternal Magic Wood box. This will require 6 Eternal Magic logs to create and can store 170 of each log, increasing to 270 at level 105 Woodcutting.
110 Firemaking – Let it Burn | Eternal Magic logs
When development for this update began, it quickly became clear that introducing new logs would come with expectations for how those logs work. Logs play a central role in Fletching, Firemaking, and Construction, so each skill needed to be addressed in some way.
Fletching was the most straightforward as one of two main focuses for this update. Construction, however, raised a more complex conversation. Given the skill’s thematic focus, it made sense that new materials would only be introduced when there was something new to build. As a result, incorporating these logs into Construction feels better suited as part of an update when Construction eventually expands to level 110.
When it came to Firemaking of course the new logs would need to be burnable, but as level 100 materials, should they be accessible with 99 Firemaking? Or was this the moment to raise the cap? These questions sparked internal discussions about the identity and purpose of Firemaking in RuneScape—and what meaningful content could define a level 110 expansion. Ultimately, the conclusion was clear: if level 100 logs were to be burnable, it made sense to raise the Firemaking level cap to 110 alongside them and add support for the cap increase.
This includes:
- Eternal Magic logs can be burned on the ground and on bonfires
- Eternal Magic log bonfires have a burn time of 6 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Bonfires boosts will scale up accordingly.
- Fire Spirit rewards scale with Eternal Magic logs.
- The War’s Retreat campfire can be upgraded to Eternal Magic
- This requires level 100 Firemaking and costs 1,000 Eternal Magic logs and 1,000 Marks of War at War's Wares.
- Smithing's heat mechanics scale with 100-110 Firemaking.
- Protean logs remain unchanged for Firemaking.
We can’t discuss Woodcutting and Fletching without introducing some exciting new tools!
This update brings a range of new augmentable hatchets for you to wield. We’ve also taken your feedback to heart and ensured these tools come with unique, memorable names.
First up:
"Hatchet of Ember and Glade" Level 90 Augmentable Hatchet
The mighty counterpart to the Pickaxe of Earth and Song and Mattock of Time and Space.
This new augmentable hatchet is made by combining the level 70 Crystal hatchet and level 80 Imcando hatchet with a new item the "Shard of the Lumberjack" which is purchased from Wilfred who can be found just north of Falador.
To get your hands on this hatchet, much like the Pickaxe of Earth Song, you'll require:
- Completion of While Guthix Sleeps, Plague’s End and Birthright of the Dwarves.
- 90 Smithing to create the tool at the dragon forge in the Ancient Cavern.
- 90 Woodcutting to use the hatchet.
"Hatchet of Bloom & Blight" Level 100 Augmentable Hatchet
Once you’ve acquired the Hatchet of Ember and Glade, you can further enhance it by teaming up with your old friend Ramarno once again. Using your Necromancy powers, you’ll uncover the steps required to craft this mighty tool. Like the Pickaxe of Life and Death, and sitting proudly at level 100, this hatchet provides the best XP and log yield while Woodcutting.
This mighty hatchet will require the following:
- A Hatchet of Ember and Glade
- 100 Woodcutting, 100 Fletching, 100 Smithing, 90 Necromancy
- Completion of Kili Row, and Pieces of Hate.
Finally, you'll also find that all augmentable hatchets are now 3 tiers more powerful than their smithed counterparts, with all hatchets increasing in power with Woodcutting levelling benefits.
Masterwork Bow
Reaching level 110 Fletching unlocks the ability to craft the Masterwork Bow! As a master craftsman, you’ll combine your Fletching and Smithing expertise to create this powerful level 100 bow through a complex process, similar to crafting existing Masterwork equipment.
Creating the Masterwork Bow is a true test of skill, requiring 110 Fletching and Woodcutting, 99 Smithing, and 90 in Necromancy, Crafting, Runecrafting, and Magic.
To begin, you’ll need to complete a new achievement, “Fletch Quest.” This involves crafting an Eternal Magic Shortbow and Crossbows, upgrading each all the way to Martial weapons.
Reminder - Existing Elder God arrows will be automatically changed from level 95 to level 100 to be compatible with the Masterwork Bow.
During development, we shared one of our initial ideas for the Masterwork Bow’s effect: granting a powered-down version of boss-weapon effects. While the feedback was mixed, it became clear this wasn’t the direction you wanted us to pursue. As a result, we’ve decided to return to the drawing board.
Our plan is to revisit the topic of effects for all Masterwork weapons after the release of the Masterwork Staff alongside the 110 Runecrafting update. This will allow us to carefully consider the best options for adding meaningful and interesting effects for where these weapons are intended.
However, there are some extra bits of QoL for the Bow of the Last Guardian which we added and have kept in. You can find these within the patch notes on release of the update.
Wrapping up
That’s a lot to take in, but if you’re still with us—thank you! We’re not done yet. Alongside everything we’ve covered, there are even more additions and changes coming with 110 Woodcutting and Fletching. Some of these were directly inspired by your feedback, while others arose naturally during development. Here’s a look at all the extras:
Smithable Hatchets & Hatchet QoL
Before development began, we asked the community what they wanted to see in the 110 Woodcutting & Fletching update. Two of the most highly requested features were adding the missing smithable hatchets and introducing quality-of-life changes to hatchets on the toolbelt.
We’ve delivered on both! In addition to the level 100 Primal hatchet, we’ve added the missing smithable hatchets from level 60 to 90. You’ll now be able to smith Orikalkum, Necronium, Bane, and Elder Rune hatchets at their respective levels, creating a smoother progression throughout your Woodcutting journey.
We’ve also made an exciting change to toolbelted hatchets. Just like Pickaxes and Mattocks, hatchets on your toolbelt can now be freely removed, so you won’t lose the ones you’ve worked hard to obtain! Simply interact with your toolbelt interface to remove and manage them as you like.
Crystallise and Light Form
One of the other highly requested changes involved concerns about using the Crystallise spell and Light Form prayer while chopping Mahogany trees for some of the best Woodcutting XP rates. Rightly so, you pointed out that it didn’t make much sense for a level 60 tree to offer the highest XP for grinding to level 120, so we took a closer look.
RuneScape is a vast game with nearly 25 years of content. It’s not always feasible to account for every training method, nor do we aim to eliminate all quirks, as they contribute to a fun and varied experience. However, we agree that it’s not ideal for a level 60 tree to provide some of the best Woodcutting XP. After evaluating our options, we decided to follow Mining’s approach with Crystallise and Light Form by adjusting their XP bonuses from 50% and 87.5% to 20% and 40%, respectively. (This adjustment also affects Fishing.)
Previously, this method could offer nearly double the XP at a cost of less than ~1m GP/hour, all while focusing on a level 60 tree. By reducing its effectiveness, we’ve addressed the imbalance without resorting to heavier-handed options, such as nerfing the XP or stats of Mahogany trees outright. We believe this solution is less disruptive and ensures that Woodcutting as a whole remains enjoyable for all players.
F2P Changes
Since last year’s Woodcutter's Grove update to the Fort, Woodcutting has been in a somewhat awkward position for free-to-play players. The re-tiering of trees inadvertently left F2P unable to access certain tree types, creating gaps in their leveling journey.
With this update, we’re addressing this by granting F2P access to teak, maple, and acadia trees, providing smoother progression for Woodcutting. Additionally, F2P players will also have access to the respective wood boxes for these trees, further enhancing their skilling experience.
- Teak trees can be found on Musa Point
- Maple trees can be found on the south side of Varrock
- Acadia trees can be found north of Het’s Oasis
The forests of Gielinor are about to come alive! Whether you’re a seasoned lumberjack or just sharpening your first hatchet, we can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
We look forward to seeing you all among the trees!
