There's nothing in the world quite like the dedication of an Old School RuneScape player, and since launching OSRS Mobile, you've really proven your determination to keep on the grind. From a cruise ship in Alaska surrounded by glaciers, to getting 99 Prayer at the top of the Big Buddha in Thailand, clearly you're not ones for XP waste. We've also seen Old School accompany you to hockey games, the dentist and even snuck into school assemblies.
These stories remind us why we're aiming high with our plans for the Official Client. We're dedicated to delivering a client experience that's seamless, beautiful and at the forefront of gameplay innovation. With the Official Client, we want you to be able to play Old School RuneScape like never before.
We have three core missions when it comes to developing the Official Client:
- To launch our own plugin ecosystem – a platform that empowers creativity and drives innovation. We want to give you the tools to redefine how you experience the game, wherever you play it!
- Beautiful graphics – but only if we can guarantee buttery-smooth performance as well. Every detail is being fine-tuned to bring you an experience that’s not just immersive, but familiar and to your preference, no matter the device.
- Seamless cross-play. Whether you’re on PC, Steam, or Mobile , we want OSRS optimised for your device of choice. No barriers, no limits – just play.

Those of you familiar with RuneLite, or modding other games outside of Old School, may already be familiar with the power of plugins. They can change the entire way a game is played – whether that's adding extra accessibility features, giving you questdirections and setting up activity alerts, or completely opening the game up for creativity with custom camera controls, entity hiders and the ability to pull in a Jad model for a quick pic in the middle of Varrock.
We're working towards introducing plugins to our Official Client, collaborating with well-known OSRS plugin creators. Once we're ready, we'll be opening the gates for any plugin creators amongst you, whether you're an established developer or an aspiring dev wanting to dip your toes in. We're dedicated to supporting you to bring your ideas to life.
API
We'll be delivering a powerful LUA-based API as we look for opportunities to expose as much functionality as we can. This means creators can script using LUA. This was important to us as we want it to be as accessible as possible. We'd never inflict OS spaghetti code on you! We wanted to make sure that you could use pre-learned skills to hit the ground running. Even if you haven't got hands-on with LUA yet, with it being a commonly used tool, finding materials to learn will be easy.
Plugin Hub
For those of you who just want to get hands on and play, we will be launching an intuitive in-game plugin hub to download, install and manage plugins. You'll be able to enjoy a seamless addition of game-enhancing features, all from the comfort of your game screen.
Yep, that includes on mobile!
We're also dedicated to creating a community space for all-things plugin. We want to connect players, plugin devs and J-Mods for a collaborative development journey. Community is at the heart of this endeavour for us, so it's incredibly important for us to be in and amongst you, listening to your feedback, advising on plugin development and making sure your feedback and bug reports get back to the correct creators efficiently. We hope that our Official Client J-Mod team will become familiar faces to you, through casual chats in Discord channels, to Discord stages, plugin developer calls and more!
All of this work is already in motion, and we're already compiling your suggestions and feedback, so please make sure to share your thoughts from the get-go!
Available on Mobile
The big one! When first deciding to take on adding plugins to the Official Client, we couldn't see a world where they weren't also available on mobile. We want you to be able to bank tag on the go to make bossing during the weekly shop easier, or to better manage your inventory while sunning it up on holiday. We know the grind never stops, so why should you settle for a restricted experience just because you're out touching grass?

When we set out to create our official HD mode, we had a clear vision: to build a foundation that could evolve over time, offering customisation and always staying true to what our players need. This isn't just about enhancing visuals, it's about creating a better-performing, future-proof experience across all devices.
The first step in this journey is the beta launch of our new proprietary rendering technology. Initially, this will run in an emulated SD mode, faithfully replicating the classic 2007 visuals but with significant improvements in performance.
Following that, we’ll introduce the beta for the HD mode – an opt-in graphics mode that brings Gielinor to life like never before. This includes dynamic sunlight, shadows, atmospheric fog, and HD water, with more to come. Our goal is to truly capture the essence of each and every location in the world, curating the lighting and atmospherics to suit the area, rather than just a blanketed HD preset covering the entire game. You'll really feel the difference when travelling from the bright, sunlit lands of Varlamore, to the eerie fog that envelopes Morytania.

Ahead of our Sailing launch, we’ll begin rolling out the first phase of the new Runetek renderer running the SD graphics mode across PC, Mac, and Mobile , gathering feedback and ensuring a stable foundation. Shortly after, we’ll expand into the first stages of the HD graphics mode across all platforms.
This is just the beginning. Our initial HD release lays the groundwork for even more to come: new rendering features, deeper player-driven refinements, and optimisations to make the Official Client the best-looking and fastest-running version yet.
The future of HD mode is bright, and we can’t wait for you to experience it.

That’s a wrap on the latest Official Client update! Make sure that you let us know your thoughts on all we’ve discussed today!
