Vote On The Future of Treasure Hunter, MTX & RuneScape

The future of RuneScape is in your hands.

We promised to make major changes to secure the long-term future of RuneScape – one where MTX is significantly reduced, integrity is back at the heart of the game, and where future success is defined by a growing community.

That journey starts here. This is part of a wider belief from us - the need to build a stronger foundation for the next era of RuneScape. Over the last few months, we’ve been rethinking how we design, fund, and evolve the game to make sure every decision supports fair, rewarding, and lasting gameplay. This vote represents the first and most major step in restoring that balance.

Through our MTX Experiments, we’re more confident than ever that dramatic, bold change is the right way forward. We now know we can strike a healthy balance of integrity-led design, serving those with less time and ensuring everything remains sustainable.

We believe in this proposal as an era-defining change for the future of the game. We want this to pass. But as we promised, our last step is to validate any decision with the community. So, just as we did for the birth of Old School, YOU will cast the deciding vote.

The Vote

From today until November 11th at 11:59pm GMT, we’re opening a public vote on our proposal for the future of RuneScape! You can find it here.

Harkening back to the birth of Old School, voting for this proposal is a simple opt in decision. If you agree with the proposal, Vote Yes. If you don’t agree, simply abstain.

If we receive 100,000 votes or more, we’ll confirm our proposal as the future direction of the game! We’ll let you know our plans for what to expect and when once the vote closes.

Any votes over 100,000 will act as a clear signal of the importance and belief the community has in these plans. As a result, we’ll increase our investment and focus on delivering stronger integrity in our Roadmap – and at no cost to our content plans!

If we don’t receive the 100,000 votes needed, the game will continue as it is today for now and we’ll need to evaluate next steps.

The Proposal

We are proposing a new future for the game led by integrity, where your achievements are based on merit, and the vast experiences within Gielinor can truly shine.

Full Removal of Treasure Hunter

Treasure Hunter will be completely removed from RuneScape - no more Paid Keys, Free Daily Keys, Quest Keys or Daily Challenge Keys. It’s gone, forever.

Removal of 225 Direct XP & Skilling Items From Sale

As part of our focus on integrity, we will also be removing 225 Direct XP and Skilling related items from sale. This means no more purchasable Direct XP, no more Proteans, no more Dummies and a whole lot more. You can find the full list of items no longer being sold in the expandable box below.

Not only does this represent a significant reduction in MTX offerings, but it also represents a move to an integrity-led future for RuneScape. As a result, many of these items will no longer be available via gameplay either.

For those that are removed, we’ll make sure there’s an extended amnesty period where you can use up any of these items you currently own. This will be focused on MTX items like Proteans and Portables, and not items like Slayer Masks or Skilling Outfits.

If you are one of the players who usually depends on these items, we’ve heard your feedback. While change will have an initial impact, we’ll be investing heavily in new, integrity-first content that creates more meaningful ways to play, progress and achieve your goals in healthier ways for the game.

Year-Long Integrity Roadmap

While MTX has caused friction and frustration for many years, so have many of our legacy issues left untouched over the years. This was no more apparent than in our recent Leagues, where players both new and returning faced some of these challenges head on.

We will invest in a year-long Integrity Roadmap that addresses the heart of issues that have long held RuneScape back – from UI, to onboarding, to Dailyscape, revisiting the combat status quo and beyond. We’ll also be looking at the balance of our XP progression with a significant reduction in free and paid MTX progression options to make sure each Skill is still a satisfying experience to level up.

And here’s our promise to you. This will all be done without impacting one of the biggest and most ambitious content Roadmaps in RuneScape’s history. If the vote passes, we’ll announce this Roadmap alongside our Content Roadmap in January’s RuneScape Ahead.

Purchasable Bonus XP

For those of you who told us you rely on MTX items to fit RuneScape into your life, we will continue to offer Bonus XP in the store as the only purchasable means to support progression.

Bonus XP feeds into the healthy gameplay loops of RuneScape, requiring you to participate in the core gameplay and use items earned or acquired from other players to benefit.

To further reinforce this intent for players, there will be a per skill cap on storable Bonus XP - encouraging you to use what you have through active play and discourage stockpiling.

We believe offering Bonus XP in a limited, healthy way strikes the right balance, supporting the 54% of players that expressed a desire to retain a progression-friendly MTX option in our MTX Experiment surveys, while significantly reducing the harm to game integrity through the many items removed with these changes.

Cosmetics

We’ll continue introducing new gameplay-earnable and paid cosmetics to RuneScape, but with a few changes based on what we’ve learned in the Experiments.

We will have a firm focus on visual integrity for future cosmetics, ensuring they feel grounded and always true to the visual identity of Gielinor. This will be paired with less overt cosmetic effects that distract and clutter social areas within the game.

For those who want the purest experience, we’ll also be giving you more control over cosmetic visibility through a new cosmetic toggle options.

What Happens If It Passes

Even if we reach 100,000 votes before the poll closes, we will be confirming what comes next on November 12 2025 (the day after the poll closes).

On this day, we'll outline more details on what to expect and when. We're sure you'll have plenty of questions, so this will include an extensive FAQ covering the ramifications of change so you know exactly what to expect.

As to when this will happen, if validated, the changes will not be implemented immediately. Once we know you support this, we'll need a few months to complete our development work. We'll announce our launch date for changes on November 12.

Time To Have Your Say

This is one of the most important decisions in RuneScape's history, and it’s one we’ll make together.

If you believe in this proposal as much as we do, head on over to our Vote Page here and cast your vote to support the proposal. In just 14 days, history will be made either way.

We can’t wait to see what you think.
