Sailing Player Designed Island Winner

Sailing Player Designed Island Winner

The Winter Summit poll has now concluded. In our recent poll, we asked you to rank four player-designed islands, based on which you would most like us to take forward and design as a team. Rather than simply asking you to vote for a single favourite, we wanted to offer the ability to rank each pitch based on which you prefer most, taking into account our learnings across the Sailing project regarding how we consult the community on these topics. The data is now in, and we're ready to announce the winner of our Player-Designed Island Competition!

Across every way we can reasonably interpret the results, Wyrmscraig has emerged as the clear frontrunner. Congratulations!

Wyrmscraig received:

  • The highest number of first-choice votes
  • The strongest combined first and second-choice support
  • The highest overall average score, when considering all rankings
  • And the fewest last-choice votes, meaning it was the least disliked option out of all four.

While other islands performed well, Wyrmscraig consistently ranked highly across the board. This tells us that, not only did the most players want this idea refined above all others, but also that a large portion of the community would be happy to see it developed further, even if it wasn’t their top pick. We hope you're excited to see Wyrmscraig come to life! We're incredibly excited to work with RoseNMcGeet on fleshing out a full design for you to provide further feedback on before it gets locked in with a final poll!

Before we wrap things up here, we’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in this competition for your incredible submissions. While you might not have been in the running for the final vote, your time, passion, and enthusiasm to see the seas of Geilinor expand haven’t gone unnoticed. The ideas expressed throughout this may be the spark that ignites much bigger ideas for content in the future and we’re more determined than ever to explore how we can continue to include even more player-driven content in the future!

Many of you have expressed interest in what our internal shortlist of the top 20 or 50 islands looked like, and why we didn't move forward with them. For now, we’d like the focus to remain on the winning entry and our finalists, but we’re exploring ways in which we can show some of these to you – perhaps in a dedicated livestream or stage discussion!

We'll be individually reaching out to our wonderful runner-ups alongside some of those who were very close to making our final shortlist over the next few days. We've got plenty to think about for the future, and we're excited to explore some of your ideas further when we can.

For now, please give a massive congratulations to RoseNMcGeet for their design of Wyrmscraig!

Dev Comment: First of all, the map looks great and this pitch really sold their vision. We really like the boss concept and the mechanics, plus the skilling acitivites are also very unique and slot nicely into the overall theme. If this idea were to move forward, we would need to adjust some of the rewards. At this stage, we don't want to add more potions than we already have in the game. The potion effects could be introduced, but in other ways. We also think getting cloth for the golems could lead to player frustration, so that would be something we'd look to change. Lastly, the ability to buy tasks from the Slayer master would not be something that we would feel comfortable adding to the game, so this would be changed if successful. Great work!

Boat Combat (Cannonballs)

On the topic of the Winter Summit poll, there was a question about updates to cannonballs that didn't meet the 70% threshold for being released into the game.

Our goal behind offering this change was to reduce some of the resourcing issues with cannonballs. As we explained in the blog, we believed that doing so would allow us to create a better economy in the long-term for cannonballs, as they have relatively high demand, for both Sailing and the Dwarven Multi-cannon.

From looking into the feedback on this topic, it's clear that opinions are mixed, and many of you don't feel this change is necessary. We imagine there's many reasons why this might be. You might have already invested your money into cannonballs and prefer having the option to use them for both purposes. Or, you might just feel strongly that separating them could make Sailing feel less integrated with the wider game. Regardless of the reasoning, we hear you and we won't be pushing ahead without your approval. However, we're keen to ensure that, alongside our fixes to boat combat, we try our best to fix the resourcing problem that players have expressed having with cannonballs.

As mentioned in our blog post, we're still committed to increasing the number of cannonballs that drop from various sources within Sailing, such as from drop tables and from cannonball stall thieving. On top of that, we'll also ensure that cannonball shops restock faster, which should help with acquisition.

But, do you remember the ammo-saving facility idea that we mentioned not wanting to proceed with in our last blog post? Well... Considering that the poll question around separating cannonballs failed, we've decided to design it and see whether you prefer that idea instead.

Introducing the Ballistic Attractor. A new facility that you can build on your boat, which has a 60% chance of saving cannonballs that were fired directly from your boat.

The schematics for this facility would be given by Ava after completing the Animal Magnetism Quest.

Other requirements include:

  • 50 Sailing
  • 44 Construction

You can build one of these on a Sloop and Skiff, but not a Raft. To build it, you'll require 10 Mahogany Planks, 5000 Water Runes, 1000 Law Runes, 5 Lead Bars and 5 Steel Bars.

Please note, the Ballistic Attractor would not be an extra slot added onto existing boats. Rather, it's a new facility that would replace an existing facility if your slots are already full. Unfortunately, adding a new facility spot (in addition to the current slots available) is currently outside the scope of this project because we have a limited amount of space that we can work with on boats.

So, there's our design - what do you think? Do you like these changes, or do you want more? We're hoping to release this alongside a batch of Boat Combat Improvements, in early March, if successful.

Question:
Should we add a new facility to collect cannonballs used at sea, as explained in the blog?
