The Returners Guide to DXP and RuneScape

The Returners Guide to DXP and RuneScape

Double XP is back after its long hiatus and kicks off today! In classic fashion, this is a 10-day event where you have 48 hours of Double XP to use at your leisure. The event will end May 10th. You can also pause the timer if you'd like to do other activities that aren't focused on the XP gains.

This is the first DXP event since last November and RuneScape has changed in some pretty meaningful ways since then so we wanted to give a quick round-up to help you get started. Before we recap those, here are the most important things to note about this Double XP event, which has been shaped by your feedback and our Road to Restoration goals:

  • Less daily pressure: Daily login incentives removed to reduce FOMO and align with the move away from Dailyscape.
  • Final use of Tokens: Tokens can still be earned, but this is their last event. Any remaining Tokens will be converted to GP at the end.
  • DXP Store winding down: The store returns with a reduced stock before closing permanently at the end of the event. Skilling Outfits remain available in the store during this event, with plans to make them easier to earn in-game in future.

From overhauls to dailyscape, combat, the early game and the UI, to major integrity changes like the removal of Treasure Hunter, your approach to Double XP may look very different. That’s alongside the release of new content, like Havenhythe, our latest area expansion.

This blog will get you up to speed on the most important changes made!

Treasure Hunter Removal

The removal of Treasure Hunter is one of the biggest changes since November. This marks a major shift away from MTX-driven progression and towards a more consistent, gameplay-first experience.

  • Treasure Hunter fully removed: No more keys, no purchases, no in-game sources.
  • Items being phased out: Oddments and the related store have been removed, and many bonus XP items such as Proteans from Treasure Hunter are being retired, but currently owned items remain accessible for now.
  • Radiant Stars introduced: A clearer, more transparent way to gain bonus XP through the Marketplace.

It’s important to note for those of you jumping back in for this DXP: while new Protean and MTX items are no longer obtainable via Treasure Hunter, we have not yet removed the items players already had. We’ll be doing this in early 2027, so if you’ve got Proteans, Portables, Combat Dummies, etc., now’s a good time to use them.

A New Look & Feel

You may notice the game looks and feels a little different. We’ve updated the flow and design of the UI, and we’ve been making broader visual improvements to reduce clutter, improve clarity, and bring the world into a more consistent, grounded style.

  • Updated interface: Cleaner visuals, restored stone icons, and the return of the circular minimap.
  • Reduced visual noise: Bright outlines and intrusive effects have been toned down, while markers and indicators have been updated to make it easier to read what is happening in combat.
  • More grounded visuals: Outfits and items are being updated to better fit RuneScape’s world, while cosmetic toggles let you control how much of other players’ overrides and effects you see.
  • World updates: Areas like Lumbridge and Varrock have been refreshed, alongside ongoing improvements across the wider game.

Combat Style Modernisation

Combat has always been a key part of RuneScape, and it’s gotten a modern makeover. Melee, Ranged, and Magic have all been refreshed to feel clearer and more intuitive, especially in the early game. We worked with the community over several betas to polish the changes and so if it’s been a while, combat should now feel more approachable without losing its depth at the highest levels.

  • Refreshed Ability system: Fewer, more meaningful abilities with clearer progression and synergies so abilities scale more naturally.
  • Basic attacks return: A more familiar combat rhythm, with improved clarity through better tutorials, cleaner visuals, and updated action bars.
  • Expanded progression: Core combat skills now extend to level 120.

DailyScape Overhaul

A major focus of recent updates has been removing “Dailyscape” systems that encouraged logging in for checklists rather than focusing on your goals. There has been an extensive overhaul to a variety of elements!

  • Fewer daily chores: Many systems no longer reset daily or require strict timing.
  • More flexible content: Activities can be done on your schedule, with rewards rebalanced so progression is less tied to short, repeatable tasks including some activities becoming full-fledged systems in their own right such as the Soul Reaper Slayer training, Guthixian Caches & Liberation of Mazcab no longer having a lockout! Play at your pace.
  • Some content removed: Systems that couldn’t be adapted have been retired, including Wilderness Flash Events, Warbands, and other time-pressured activities.

Aura Overhaul

After being a major pain point for players, Auras have now been removed, with many of their effects reworked and redistributed across the game. This reduces time-gated optimisation and makes your power feel like a natural part of your progression.

  • Auras removed: No more timers, refreshes, or aura management.
  • Effects redistributed: Benefits moved into skills themselves, spells, items, and unlocks, so power is earned and always available.
  • Less setup, more play: No need to plan sessions around your aura uptime.

Early Game Rebalance

As part of our Road to Restoration roadmap, we're rolling out a series of rebalances across different level brackets. Starting with a rebalance to the early game aimed to address several pain points in early game training methods and smoothing out the inconsistencies in game progression.

  • Updated Thieving systems: New pickpocketing improvements so you spend less time being punched and more time looting.
  • Reseeding loot tables: Added a variety of seeds to early game monster loot tables to help get new accounts farming.
  • Improved XP rates: Boosted rates from Agility Courses, Divination memories & Hunter targets

Read more about these changes here in the dedicated patch notes.

That covers the major changes, but there’s plenty more that you’ll notice as you play. We’ve rounded things out with a range of smaller improvements and rebalances, from more predictable AFK pickpocketing in Thieving to RuneMetrics Pro now being included for all members, so you can track your progress in-game at no extra cost.

Oh and last but definitely not least:

Fresh New Content

The Road to Restoration roadmap is running alongside our content roadmap for the year, and since the last DXP event in November we have added a variety of new content across skills and levels, including:

  • Havenhythe Part One: A brand new landmass filled with content that will continue to grow this year! New quests, early game bosses, expansion to level 110 Hunter content and all manner of things in between !
  • Heists: A new type of high-end Thieving content where you plunder secure facilities for their bounty! Alongside this there are new core thieving content such as new pickpocket targets/chests and stalls all the way up to level 120 Thieving.
  • Flesh Hatcher Mhekarnahz: A new terrifying mid-level boss to sink your teeth into!
  • Alongside hundreds of patch notes that are aimed at improving the game every week!
